I just launched Quorbo at quorbo.com, a simple letter-revealing game (think Wheel of Fortune with some twists) where you get 6 turns to guess the day's quote!

It's my first post-parenthood side project, first thing to ship since ditching Twitter for Mastodon, and first web game. Being a working dad has taught me (for the first time,😬) to focus on simplicity. Anyway, i hope you have fun with it!

@evan I think having a "HugOps hotline" sounds like a really good idea!
Back in the hayday of message boards, there were "Big Board Operator" forums where admins could share tips or ask for help.
Perhaps @jerry is aware of one already exists?

I am lucky enough to own my own servers in a colo and have *seen some things*, so I am happy to help out any smaller Fediverse instances that need help with hosting or configs or even moderation assistance!

@eevee Do you have a link to the details on why it's shutting down?
I would be happy to help, either with keeping it online or extending the shutdown window to allow people to migrate safely.

Have servers, will use 'em!

I’ll come to bed soon. I’m on Mastodon, and I’ve never seen so many people online before who aren’t wrong on the internet!

It’s glorious.

Today in scary-as-fuck things that happened on Twitter:

Replies were down for about two hours there on Twitter. You couldn't reply if you were on a web browser, either on PC or on mobile.
That's not the scary part.

The scary part is that you couldn't *discover* that anything was wrong. No trending hashtag. No streams filling up with people taking about replies being broken. No hundred polls saying, "hey, is this happening to you, too?"

Just... silence. As if everything is totally fine.

Each year, the night before the Boston Marathon, hundreds of cyclists meet at the race's starting line in Hopkinton for an unofficial, unsanctioned event: a midnight ride along the marathon’s 26.2 mile route. Here's my @gbhnews story on the tradition. wgbh.org/news/local-news/2023/ For the audio version (red "play" button at the top) I biked more than I have in a single trip since high school, including Heartbreak Hill.

I like putting things onto to do lists, and I LOVE checking things off of to do lists. What I struggle with is the middle part.

I honestly have a lot of empathy for people who are having trouble letting go of Twitter because they used to be popular, or very engaged, there. I made amazing relationships there, and there was a time when I really loved the feedback loop I had. (I didn’t care that much about being “known”, but I valued the access it gave me.) It’ll be years before the fediverse reaches its own equivalent strengths, and I don’t fault anyone for struggling to transition from a familiar (if failing) platform.

Get.

Off.

Twitter.

No matter what he's planning on doing with generative AI on Twitter, posting there is helping him do it.

I have issues with Substack and Post and obviously would love if people embraced Mastodon and the fediverse but either way find an alternative and get the hell out.

To who have been blocked by Elon Musk, it matters.

To the community and the ethnic minorities, it matters.

This week I am taking a long, hard look at the consequences of Elon Musk taking control of Twitter.

Please share this video with everyone on Twitter, who are yet to understand, why we are all moving to 🐘.

Here's a thought:
"If children are slaughtered in their school and your reaction is 'Don't you dare think about taking my guns!!' rather than 'How do we stop this from ever happening again??' then we don't have a difference in political opinion. We have a difference in morality."

This is the only thing really worth saving, and possibly worth reading, that I ever posted to Twitter. #infosec #cybersecurity

Recognize the early stages of infosec: "I just read the top 100 passwords’ and they're super weak!’”
"I turned on external logging and there's al these brute force attempts!” “People still use Java!"
~ “SHODAN!"

Recognize the secondary stages of infosec: "I stayed up for 30 hours straight an it was awesome!” “Is antivirus actually useless?” “I'm gonna be the best purple teamer!” “But they promised they'd reimage last year!” “Damn, | gotta learn Python..” “But wasn't it China?”

Recogrize the tertiary stages of infosec: “NEVER MIND, they do need antivirus.* “So, attribution is hard...” “Paexec, again?!l” “Stolen creds, again?l” “How is my hard drive full of VM snapshots?” “I went to a con but | just talked to people...” "Do I drink too much?”

Recognize the quaternary stages of infosec: “You know, forget the pen test, let’s just build an asset inventory and network map.” “I secretly want to skip this con, but I'm speaking about beer.” “I am genuinely considering opening a bar in a few years” “I probably drink too much.”

So the CEO of Twitter keeps making terrible decisions for journalism and the internet, and you spend all day talking about it on his network.

That’s a win for him. It’s called the attention economy.
