Since it's #worldbeeday, let me suggest reading @Hello_KayT's recent paper on Beehive, a flexible networking stack for direct-attached FPGA accelerators:

On my way to HotOS! A little anxious because it’s the first conference that I’ve attended since the UW situation blew up at OSDI and half the UW systems faculty will be there but looking forward to seeing everyone and super excited to hear the talks.

@irene it's my party trick! My aspirational squat variation is a dragon squat, which starts off like a curtsey squat and then quickly becomes a movement that probably some personal trainer came up with in a fever dream to train (mildly torture) their client.

@ricci @irene @dev @dan @sharon well my Bolt was bankrolled by @jbalkind 😂 we actually got the 2LT. I need the adaptive cruise control, because my body behaves like it's been in a car crash just doing every day life and pressing a pedal constantly is apparently too much for my SI joints 🤷🏻‍♀️

The seat heaters are great though. I've got a steering wheel heater too. They turn on automatically when it's cold outside. I've never felt so loved by a car.

@irene @dev @dan tbh the top 5 items on the list just looks like things I'm allergic to

@dan seems like you need some load balancing

@irene @ricci @sharon I mean mine seems to have a race mode button...it's gotta be cool

@atsuzaki @irene @amontema

Oh 100%. This PhD thesis is brought to you by spite

This is me. Probably clear from some of the details in there. I wrote this in one morning after getting tired of all the ass covering and one-sided statements where the department gets to put out whatever narrative it wants at the expense of others. Irene, in this case.

I'm just getting used to being able to offer up more details. Up until January when the investigation ended, it was about 9 months of being strongly advised to not say anything, even within the department.

This was not the first time I was asked not to speak publicly about lab issues.
I reference another go-around with the department in trying to get systemic problems in a different lab addressed in my second year. It was a much more "routine set" of problems (MIA advisors, bad advising, unrealistic expectations, ect.) in that case. Again, we were asked not to speak about it public because the department was working with us in good faith.

A perspective from one of the UW women. I’ve linked it in my blog post. irenezhang.net/uw-women-statem

@dan @wilbowma i am kind of disappointed they moderated my email basically pointing out that a basic info sec class would teach them about differential privacy

I sure am glad that UW is so committed to maintaining the anonymity of people in their recent HR investigation report that they did not identify the Principal Researcher in the systems group at Microsoft Research who is an affiliate faculty member and is married to another Principal Researcher in the same group who is a lab alumna and former affiliate faculty member, and also runs the social media platform at discuss.systems/about/ and is named Dan.

The Pepperidge Farm meme featuring an old man holding a bag of cookies. The top text says "Remember when the Allen School said they 'should do better when it comes to attracting and supporting women and other underrepresented groups".
The bottom text says "Pepperidge Farm Remembers"A screenshot of a tweet from 2018 that says: ‘The Allen School is committed to advancing diversity in our program and in our field. As an academic community and as an industry, we believe we can and should do better when it comes to attracting and supporting women and other underrepresented groups.' (2/6)

@iwein @irene the report is in fact nonsensical

@irene i think i need to get a sticker for my laptop that says "i have a boyfriend." this doesn't happen to me at UW luckily, but i keep getting interrupted by men when i work in coffee shops, who say things like "you looked so focused" but then want to talk to me anyway.

2025-02-25

@dev i've been eyeing a framework laptop for a while now. if they ever come out with a qmk programmable keyboard for their 13 inch laptop, i will instantly switch

@irene i think it's really important people understand the difference between what a normal person would consider harassment and what the legal definition of harassment entails and how universities would like to assess it.

at least UW maintains what is essentially a "shoot your shot" policy which is that someone asking another person out once is not harassment, even if unwanted. my understanding from talking to a title ix case manager is that if 10 men each hit on 1 woman once, it would most likely not be considered harassment.

@irene as of 10/11/24, this is the mandatory reporter list for UW. it does not include anyone in CSE. uw-s3-cdn.s3.us-west-2.amazona

@irene note to this: the university chooses when to treat us as students vs employees. as students, we can refuse to cooperate in an investigation. as employees (which presumably we are to HR) , we are required to cooperate with an investigation

@dev (unfortunately) I'm at UW, so I'll definitely be around. Message me closer to, and you can come meet the kitties :)
