ARCHIVE Today, one of the women who made me fall in love with art. The queen of self transformation, Cindy Sherman.

ARCHIVE ‘Unlearn II’, oil on linnen, 100 x 100 cm, 2021, Private Collection of @france.lejeune

Incredibly happy with the new home for this work.

“The clear allusions to the decorative hold a deeper meaning. The historical function of the female has often been reduced to this decorative role. Fabrics and textiles have been the realm of the woman. By placing physical fragments of the female creator amongst these textiles, the emphasis is on the way she handles herself in this reality. Will she transcend or will she drown?”

ARCHIVE Unlearn I, oil on linen, 100 x 100 cm, 2021

Conceived for the exhibition State of Things at K.L.8. in May 2021, this first canvas of a series, shows a piece of the body of the artist. This unconventional type of self portrait presents physical remnants that almost feel archeological.
Lush and surreal drapery reveal and hide at the same time.

ARCHIVE ‘The attempt’, 100 x 100 cm, installation: oil on linen, 16 tangerines, wooden bowl & glue, 2021, installation view @demarkten @bartvrijvogel

This installation is titled ‘The attempt’ and consists of an oil painting and a bowl of 16 composed tangerines. The fragrant fruit functions in the same manner as the Proust’s Madeleine and takes us on a road to the village where the artist grew up. Nameless buildings seem to block the road which is crowned by a church tower, the watchful structure that observes and regulates and refers to the patriarchal structure. The artist’s self portrait is both creator and creation as she takes centre stage. The physical double of the tangerines on the painting adds an olfactory aspect to the work. The viewer’s attention is being pulled between the physical item and the image. Which came first and which one is more real?
Conceptualised as an answer on a video by fictional artist ‘Bart Vrijvogel’, the tangerine, a clear representation of the female sex, is restored and presented as whole again. The figure’s gesture is careful, almost tender. The artist takes ownership of her sex, not only on a physical, but also on an intellectual level. A clear answer to the brute force used on the fruit in the video ‘ DIY: Fake vagina’.

ARCHIVE The ♀Portrait Game this week with Marina Abramovic. Her amazing work spans performance, body and feminist art. Today I want to think about why they used a wild animal for this picture, with #tigerking going viral during this lockdown, I just want to say, some things are not meant to be tamed. I couldn’t even get my cat to pose correctly.

ARCHIVE The Dutiful, from the State of Things Triptych, oil on linen, 400 x 200 cm, 2021

When I paint, art historical references, personal memories and symbolism intertwine to create a new image which serves as a modern allegory.

Installation view @decoratelier_brussels “The Female Haze(d)”

This painting shows the artist in various self portraits. They are placed in a landscape reminiscent of pre-renaissance landscape painting.
Two lines separate the bigger figures at the front from the smaller figures rendered in sepia. A barrier, that looks easy enough to cross, but still seems to be holding power over the figures, is prominent in the picture.
Flowers grow from the figures at the forefront. These three figures relate in a particular way to each other. From right to left the characters can be seen to undergo an evolution in stage of (un)dress and in independence. While the figure on the far right is still searching for meaning outside of herself, the figure on the left looks out at the viewer, asserting her gaze, owning her sexuality and power.
