Also 20 years ago this was still an issue. Plasma screen TVs were becoming accessible to consumers and surround sound was taking off in the home video space. TV was mixed for surround cinematic but not everyone had a surround setup yet. They had to write laws that said the tv commercials couldn’t be louder than the main content of the channel (though these laws were largely unenforced).

That’s what the last bit of my comment was about. Compression would need significant improvement before it were usable for most things people use the internet for.

I use a VPN for 99.9% of personal Internet usage and had no issues connecting. So you’re probably correct that it’s being blocked by some means either intentional or not.

This tech would be great if we had high power nodes all across the globe. But we do not. Maybe a cool idea could be encrypted data over FM radio. The radio stations already exist and are a dying business. Nonprofits could buy up radio stations and rebroadcast data broadly and only those with the encryption keys could decrypt. Cut the ISP out entirely. Like the difference between a local call and a long distance call.

Meshtastic communication would prioritize local hops where they are available and then where there are spans of area without nodes, they could hop across radio broadcasts.

Primary issue would be speed. Next to no bandwidth on a signal like that. Kbps not Mbps. Perhaps an incentive for much better compression as well.

We don’t actually know if that’s true. Only 74% of the voting age population of the US was registered to vote in 2024. Only 65% of Americans voted on this election cycle and the popular vote was very close. We also know that Trump’s approval ratings have absolutely tanked in his first year coming in at -16 points where as when he started, he sat pretty at +16. A VPN does not stop location data for your physical device when looking at cellular data from the carrier. Your location can and is always triangulated using cell towers. VPNs only ever protect your IP address from being geolocated and encrypting the data downloaded and uploaded while connected. Bit streams are still sent and received from a physical place in the world before the VPN hides your traffic and that is recorded by the cell provider.

This is slightly false in an alarmist fashion. At least in the US, the police are not actively tracking anything without a subpoena to the cellular provider of the phone in question. They can look at the location data after the fact, using a court ordered subpoena. They can also use live location data in an emergency situation,also using a court ordered subpoena.

Cellular data from cell towers on cell networks are private property of the cellular provider companies. That’s not to say you are private while on them. Just that the police are not actively tracking your location through them without great effort for each individual they wish to track.

The idea is that the document you swear on has meaning to you. Politicians doing give a flying fuck about the constitution so long as it lines their wallets and keeps them fat and happy. Swearing on a document is insane and meaningless and it’s 100% for show. It’s meant to keep the people happy for whom the document they are swearing on, holds meaning to in the first place. Make the swear on a signed contract that states, not upholding the written law would mean forfeiting their lives and then maybe it might mean something, as long as there were some enforcement behind that sort of thing.

It really matters what those firearms look like. I don’t know the statistics but self defense arms are predominantly handguns which are not weapons for an uprising. Any militant force would be met with rifles and fully automatic weapons as well as military training. Not to mention drone warfare and gas suppression. Americans are just not soldiers.

Contrary to popular belief, only about 32% of Americans own even a single firearm. Though I suspect that number is rising along with the government instability. Most of us don’t have even a little bit of power to fight an oppressive regime such as the one we currently live under.
