A friend in the shadows...

Just another autistic, shattered (plural) individual trying to make sense of the world. Geek, nerd, dweeb, general product of the 80's. Computer hardware enthusiast, casual and retro gamer, technomancer extraordinaire. Oh, and a furry. And yes, the "typo" in the "Current Location" field is intentional, and will not change until people get their heads out of their asses and learn that compromising is not "giving up" or "letting the other guy win".

@alternativeto Makes me sick. The reasons I block ads on YouTube are simple.
First, I'm ADHD and those ads more often than not interrupt dialogue, which completely smashes the train of thought and causes me to have to back the video up.
Second, the ads are almost never about anything I'm interested in.
Third, they try to cram more than 90 minutes of ads into a 10-minute video.
Fourth, many videos have 5 ads in those same 10 minutes.
It's absurd, ... stop it, and I'll stop blocking.

@coffee Yeah, I know. I expect it to be around $3 because everything's like $1.50-$2 more than it ought to be. But $5.47 is just absurd.

Wow. I thought shrinkflation was bad, but then I tried to buy a single 15oz can of Monster Mean Bean at an Avenue C.

How in the living hell do they think a $3 (at most) can of drink should cost nearly twice as much? $5.47? For ONE can? I can get two of'em for that price in most places! WTF!?

@snazzyq Does it make the Mac tone when you turn it on? :D

Well, I got my car back on the road, thanks to help from a dear friend! Been SOOO busy lately, between vehicle work, regular work, and work at home becoming a GNU/Linux convert. I no longer have any modern devices that use Microsoft stuff, and the ancient machines I have specifically for old-school LAN gaming are running Windows 98 and Windows XP. They're all 450MHz and slower, with 128MB or lower RAM. Some day, they will be actually used... I hope.

Adam Savage getting a #fursuit is the best thing to have happened to the furry community in a long time.

What makes people think it's okay to blow someone's phone up, and continue to do so after you've sent a text saying you're trying to sleep, asking for a ride they know you presently don't have, and phrasing things in such a way to make it sound like someone else wanted them to contact you and ask?

I'm sorry but fuck that. I know they didn't specifically know I wasn't feeling good and was trying to sleep, but if someone doesn't answer after a second and third call, they're probably not going to.

@coffee Yeah, that's been one of my issues with GNU/Linux. But over the years, I've learned not to use the default sound control panel that comes with the GUI. Pulse Audio and their official audio control panel/mixer is the way to go, as far as I'm concerned.

At present, on my main rig, I've been using a SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum and it's fully supported in Linux, right down to the MIDI/game port (which Microsoft dropped support for back in Win7).

@dosnostalgic So I see! Interestingly, the version I have is different. Slightly.

I'll see if I can find it, but it looks to be basically identical.

I miss the 16- and early 32-bit days. Software just felt ... good. Even the glitchy stuff felt more polished than most of today's stuff.

Oh my god, I need about a week free of stupid. A good vacation. Like, I NEED it. I am so sick of stupid on the left, stupid on the right, stupid in front, stupid behind. I look up, and there's more stupid. People that can't clean up after themselves, people that bitch about simple statements, people that can't drive, people that push their opinions as facts, people that don't use their eyes, ears or brains. Holy shit, it's everywhere. And I'm afraid I'm gonna blow.

@dosnostalgic As a matter of fact, I think I have all of the SOUND16A suite backed up somewhere. Gonna have to dig it up even if you don't want it. :p

@dosnostalgic This reminds me of Voyetra AudioStation, a program that came with my dad's old Packard Bell 620-CD. He had a Voyetra/Turtle Beach Ad-Lib card with a ... 36.6kbps modem built into it. If you want it, I'm pretty sure I can grab it from one of my old backup CDs... provided they haven't suffered disc rot.

@coffee That may very well be! ... but to be frank, I've been wanting to make the switch for years now, as Windows and Microsoft on the whole have been getting less and less appealing. I don't give Apple my support because of their business practices, why should I continue to do so for Microsoft? I mean, yeah, I can run it for free and strip everything out of it to make it mine, but why bother with all that when everything* I can do in Windows I can do in Linux and it be free legitimately? :D

So some people made counter-points saying people should take care that their pets don't run out in the road, and that there's no preventing it when an animal jumps out unexpectedly in a blind spot. Well, countering that!

You missed the bloody point. 25MPH is the speed LIMIT. You don't have to be going the limit where there are families and their pets out playing street b-ball. I'm sorry, but when it comes to playing it safe, faster is not the answer. Just ... slow down in these places.

In light of Windows 10's upcoming canning, and because it's just too much work for me to consider running Windows 11 (because I would rather take the time to bring Windows 7 up to modern standards than to strip all the garbage out of Windows 11), I have decided to abandon Windows altogether. I am finally making the complete switch to GNU/Linux.

Sure, it's a little more work to get my games to run properly, but it's still easier than sanitizing Windows 11.

Argh, people need to slow TF down and/or pay attention while they're driving. We've lost a cat, a dog and almost lost another one because people think 40MPH+ in a residential zone where the posted speed limit is 25MPH is fine, and in all three cases the driver did NOT stop, did not even act like anything happened. Those vehicles are 2,000+ pound ballistic missiles. Treat them that way.

... idiots.

Surely some double-sided adhesive pads can hold up 5 grams worth of weight, right? Apparently not. Two of their 1-inch square pads let go of a thin, light-weight digital antenna in less than a week.

Just another example of our great, trustworthy companies getting more and more lazy and cheap. It's infuriating to see this. It's also infuriating to spend money on this stuff. If I could get my money back for everything that has failed to do its job, I'd be rich. Seriously.

YouTube: We'll censor this because it's misinformation.
Also YouTube: We'll play this ad for this scam product.

Y'know... things like this make me wish we had an "International 'Slap this CEO in the face' Day" ... every year, we line up every CEO that has made a stupid decision in spite of attempts to stop it, and select 100 lucky people who then get to walk the line and open-hand slap each CEO once.
