"Fairies in the machine room? Again?"

"The little blighters are attracted to the electrical wiring. They're not evolved to handle so much of it, they get addicted to the buzz"

"How did they get in?"

"Dead cabling, old coaxial ethernet from the 80s. It's gonna have to be all ripped out"

"Anything we can do in the short term?"

"Baits. Going to set up some old cathode-ray TVs in the break room, the fair folk go crazy for electron beams"

Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument confirms general relativity
International collaboration of over 900 researchers from 70 institutions has mapped the clustering of nearly six million galaxies, and found it's consistent with Einsteinโ€™s theory of general relativity, validating our leading model of the universe. The study also provided new upper limits on the mass of neutrinos, the only fundamental particles whose masses haven't been precisely measured. buff.ly/4g0Qibe

Hereโ€™s an interesting take from Globe & Mail columnist Andrew Coyne regarding the tariff threat and the reactions within Canada. Coyne has been a political opinion columnist for 30 years, of a right-neoliberal, but principled, lean.

Itโ€™s worth a read in its entirety. I appreciate that heโ€™s one of the few writers, on either the news or opinion side in Canada, who has chosen to cite evidence on fentanyl border movements and extra legal border crossings of people in his analysis/report. (Spoiler - He doesnโ€™t find it convincing.)

COVER REVEAL! It's my next book, "Automatic Noodle," a cozy, near-future story about a group of food service bots in an abandoned ghost kitchen who take over their own delivery app account. They rebrand as a neighborhood lunch spot, and start making tasty hand-pulled noodles. Set in San Francisco after a horrible war, this is about rebuilding and finding love after political disaster.

Coming 8.5.25!โฃ Please pre-order! us.macmillan.com/books/9781250

This is a picture of the cover of "Automatic Noodle," a book by Annalee Newitz. At the top is a blurb that reads "A story I didn't know I needed right now. So much fun!" -- Martha Wells, bestselling author of The Murderbot Diaries.

The image is brightly colored, on a sky blue background. It's an illustration of a yellow robot hand using chopsticks to lift up a rainbow-colored bite of biang biang noodles. The noodles appear to be emerging from a box that merges with an image of San Francisco's skyline below. A happy humanoid robot sits on the edge of the box, and another robot with a human torso and three mechanical legs stands below him. Robot arms to the left of the image hold a whisk. Steam floats up from the noodles. This is a picture of me, Annalee, in a white shirt covered in parrots, and I'm eating biang biang noodles at a restaurant. I am smiling and holding chopsticks. The text reads: "Pre-order now -- it's delicious."

@RuthMalan @dahukanna @trondhjort This is such a fascinating and interesting set of quotes: would you happen to know which Pava/author this particular set of quotes are from?

Thank you for sharing this conversation!

I think it is useful to frame conversations as deliberations โ€” which brings in @dahukannaโ€™s deliberate deliberately and @trondhjort quoting:

From twitter back in the day:

The realities of evil academia

Tom Gould cartoon of a woman in a white coat with bluish skin and Bride of Frankenstein hair sitting at a desk in a complex mad laboratory full of stuff like brains in jars, a crocodile skull and a corpse on a slab. A crescent moon peeps in the gothic arched window. The scientist is frowning at a sheet of paper and the caption reads, โ€œJanet had not imagined that being an evil scientist would involve so much evil paperworkโ€
