@wisteela Thanks!

One more batch! I was never very happy with the way the dragon head is so obviously just running up against the edge of the paper, but otherwise I still really like it.

The shed in the overgrown field is easily my favorite of these, but I have a real soft spot for the frog.

#art #InkDrawing #dragon

"Three small ink drawings, the first dated 10/25 and the others dated 10/26.

10/25: A wooden treasure chest with a prominent wood grain texture. Plain metal strips decorate and protect the edges, and additional strips adorn the curved top. It's closed with a lock, and a hinged handle is visible on the near end. At the far end, the wood is shaded very darkly.

The first 10/26: Two peanut pods. The one in front is half open, showing two peanuts in the shell. The one in back is intact. The outsides of the shells are lightly shaded with scratchy hatching. The inside of the open shell is more darkly shaded, and the peanut skins are textured with lengthwise hatching.

The second 10/26: Half a drawing of the head of a dragon, viewed from above. Its eye, with a slit pupil, looks up at the viewer from under a furrowed brow. The dragon has sharp cheekbones and a somewhat angular jaw.""Two ink drawings dated 10/27 and 10/28.

10:27: An abandoned shed, made of aged wood and a tin roof, in an overgrown field. The roof is dented and bent in a couple places. The door stands wide open, but nothing is seen inside but the light through the gaps in the opposite wall. Branches of one or two dead trees peek out from behind the shed. Another scraggly dead tree pokes out from the tall grass a ways behind the shed.

10/28: A retro-styled sci-fi ray gun. Its reflective metal surface is mostly shaded with stark blacks, with a small amount of hatching. A circular motif on the side is shaded to look like brushed metal. At the end of its bulbous barrel is an emitter consisting of a metal ball on a shaft surrounded by two concentric metal rings that don't seem to be attached to anything. Running down the top, bottom, and sides of the barrel are recessed stripes that connect to a recessed circle in the brushed metal circle and another around the emitter. The inking is messy overall, and some of the outlines are extremely thick.""The last three ink drawings, dated 10/29, 10/30, and 10/31.

10:29: A small dragon, wearing a party hat, popping out of a gift-wrapped box. The box is wrapped in polka-dot paper and a shiny ribbon. The lid, wrapped separately, has a large bow made from the same ribbon. The dragon's claws rest on the edge of the box as it cranes its neck and looks excitedly at something off-page.

10/30: A set of crystals resembling enargite. Several larger columns, one at an angle, are surrounded by smaller crystals at the base. The tops of the crystals are flat, mostly smooth, and shiny, while the sides are marked with lengthwise striations.

10/31: A frog, with a blank expression, wearing a witch's hat. Subtle crosshatching shades the frog's underside, while the hat is a mix of solid blacks and dense hatching."

@orangelantern @futurebird I find it important to always highlight the notion of agency and consent in everyday interactions, just to subtly enforce a sense of normalcy when it comes to "ask before touch, ask before sharing data".

About twice per year I do a very action-packed indoors Humans-vs-Zombies NERF game at a convention, where the game mechanics involves people touching each other softly on the shoulder. When we demonstrate this (every new player gets an introduction to the rules), we always ask before actually touching folks. Regardless of age or gender, and I believe that it helps set the tone for how people play the game.

It's a really mixed sort of folks who participate, nearly all ages, all genders, clothing levels, body types, education types, and I guess even a reasonable range of political views. And in 14 years, as far as I know, we hadn't had a single incident of inappropriate behaviour!

And yes, @futurebird is quite right, this needs to be the felt default for online safety too, to give kids a healthier baseline of what to want in any service.

@crinolinerobot On one hand, it is useful to have actual evidence instead of "random Mastodon user claims person is bad." On the other, (a) screenshots do not count as evidence, and (b) *use the gosh-dang content warnings! That's what they're there for!

Some people feel like they have to be talking about this constantly until they and everyone around them are exhausted, otherwise they're complicit.

Have added the name of the terf author to my filters because people have started posting screenshots of her mouthing off, and one of the things I like about Mastodon is *not* seeing people spewing hate and bile constantly.

One of the reasons I'm glad there's no quote-toot option is that it prevents people from doing the online equivalent of waving dog poo under everyone's noses. WE KNOW IT STINKS. Put it down and stop inflicting it on other people!

2025-06-17

@GeePawHill Give it time, they'll figure that one out too.

@futurebird Twelve whole digits? What luxury!

@drachenmagier They sure do!

To all communities currently being targeted as locations for data centers, the companies aiming to put those in deserve no benefit of the doubt. I'm really glad @timsteller.bsky.social is on top of this one.

Tucson is arriving late to the data-center game.
That makes us lucky. It means we can look on the proposed mega-development on the southeast side with a degree of detachment that other communities couldn't when offered these apparent opportunities years ago.
We can ask questions like, is this really an opportunity? Or is it a burden? Or some of both?Screenshot from linked article, reading:

There's no need to be for the public or officials to be deferential to this industry, as author Emily Bender told me Thursday.
"In general I would say, no benefit of the doubt to the people building the data centers," said Bender, co-author of a new book, "The AI Con: How to Fight Big Tech’s Hype and Create the Future We Want."
"Make them dot their I's and cross their T's."

"Three ink drawings dated 10/12, 10/14, and 10/14 again.

10/12: A person-sized boulder, shaded with scratchy crosshatching. It's stood on a wooden stage in front of a curtain, next to a microphone on a stand.

10/14: A couple of nails, one with its tip pointed toward the viewer, the other pointed away. On the latter, a crisscross pattern is visible on the head. Both nails are shaded with hatching and crosshatching.

The second 10/14: A handheld scythe. Its wooden handle is dark and shiny. Its metal neck bends at a right angle so that, while the handle is lying flat, the curved blade is upright. The neck and blade's rusty appearance is represented by scratchy hatching. The blade has a ridge along most of its length.""Three ink drawings, dated 10/15, 10/16, and 10/17.

10/15: A candy pumpkin with a piece of candy corn beside it and another poking out from behind. The different colors are represented by different amounts of shading, via hatching and some crosshatching.

10/16: A dragon, seen from the chest up, wearing a suit and tie. His horns swoop back in a manner resembling slicked-back hair. His expression is smug and self-assured. The dark suit jacket is shaded with hatching, and the insides of the dragon's wing membranes are lazily shaded with messy crosshatching.

10/17: An artist's paintbrush with a square tuft. The ferrule and handle are shiny and black, with a white band around the handle where it meets the ferrule.""Another set of three ink drawings, dated 10/18, 10/19, and 10/20.

10/18: A cauldron with clawed feet that raise it off the floor to make room for embers beneath it, which cast a harsh glow on the bottom of its black surface. Wispy steam or smoke trails from the top of the cauldron. A straw broom leans against its side.

10/19: An aquatic dragon with a mermaid-style tail fin.It has large fins in lieu of wings, and smaller fins on the sides of its head. Scute-like horizontal scales run down the front and underside of its body. Its arms are held close to its chest and it has a timid expression as it investigates a tiny fish.

10/20: A jack-o-lantern, with its top removed and propped against its side, serves as a hiding place for a black cat. The cat's tail sticks out the top, and its eyes are visible in the jack-o-lantern's mouth. An unlit candle sits to the side on a small saucer."'A fourth set of three ink drawings, dated 10/21, 10/22, and 10/23.

10/21: A retro-styled rocket ship with two fins on the bottom, one on top, and no visible cockpit. Behind it is a black background filled with stars. From the back end of the rocket, there is a flame and an exhaust trail that extends beyond the background.

10/22: An ornate, threatening-looking key. The head of the key consists of a circle ringed with spikes and a V-shaped motif resembling horns. A longer spike extends from the top, opposite the shaft.

10/23: A scarecrow dressed in a suit and tie, topped with a fedora, standing behind a podium. A poster on the front of the podium says "Vote!" in all capital letters, with three stars underneath. The scarecrow has a blank, bewildered expression.'

@Kitty Aw, thanks! That's one of my favorites, too.

I could also point out that Overly Sarcastic almost *is* a color-coded team with a theme, but either it's a pretty small team if you count only Red and Blue, or it's not terribly thematic since nobody *but* Red and Blue has the "video essay presenter" power set (to the point that I couldn't even tell you who the others are or what they do).

2025-06-14

Just watched Overly Sarcastic's latest Trope Talk about color-coded thematic superhero(-adjacent) teams, and Red spent a lot of time showing footage of Power Rangers. Which got me thinking.

You know how Power Rangers always wear their costume color even when not Morphin'? Imagine if a member of one of the teams that manages secret identities refused to do that for opsec reasons. Then that member gets upgraded to White Ranger, realizes that white light = all colors, and is *so mad* about it.

2025-06-13

@bulqa I couldn't begin to tell you what's actually better, but posting to Pixelfed and just *boosting* from here is also an option.
