@gruber Did China google-hack iOS 18âs Safari recommendation engine? Any idea whatâs going on here? Iâve never been to this chinapedia website, and yetâŠ
@gruber Fast Company thinks Distraction Control is controversial and unnecessary. The irony seems lost on themâŠ
@gruber Regarding your post on screen time vs dumbphones, my wife and I setup screen time passcodes on each othersâ phones so when we turn on screen time we canât disable it without the other. I definitely donât have the willpower to keep it off if I know the passcode. Iâm surprised this isnât more common. A great screen time feature would be allowing a friend you donât live with to have that control (with perhaps a $100 fee to take back control đ).
Pillaged from BlueSky:
"20 years ago we were suing teenagers for millions of dollars because they were torrenting a single Metallica album and now billionaires are demanding the free right to every work in history, so that they can re-sell it.
The law only ever serves capital."
@gruber I noticed you mentioned you couldnât get EyeSight to show your eyes open. So are all the Apple PR images just false advertising?
@sannemen Yup I had read about that on a site called Daring Fireball, which inspired my toot to @gruber đ

@gruber Is there an elegant way to do SSO (ADFS) login without webviews in iOS? Jumping between an app and Safari feels jolting. Postman does this jumping game on a Mac and itâs awful. Wouldnât want to port that experience to iOS. I work at a healthcare tech company and we need patients to authenticate with their healthcare providerâs SSO system, so we use a webview.
@gruber I agree with your take on Appleâs anti-steering policies. But Iâm curious, if a link is allowed, shouldnât a webview be allowed? And if a webview is allowed shouldnât in-app non-apple payment? Feels like a slippery slope with no clear line besides âno mention of paymentâ.
@gruber Thanks for posting Bidenâs speech on your website. It means a lot that youâre willing to put yourself out there despite the internet being what it is. â€ïž
Today in "LLMs can't do even simple reasoning":
Prompt: Sally (a girl) has 3 brothers. Each brother has 2 sisters. How many sisters does Sally have?
See a whole bunch of LLMs fail: https://benchmarks.llmonitor.com/sally
look how not smart this LLM is
you didn't prompt it right
i wasn't talking about how smart or not i am!

The new ".zip" domain is being used almost solely for malware. Some of the clicks are very deceptive, even to technically knowledgeable people. See the attached image for an example.
You can block all zip domains with the following uBlock Origin rule under My Filters:

The thing about being a trans woman is that growing up, all the boys around me knew I wasn't one of them.
Nobody ever called me a man until they realized they could hurt a woman by doing so.
Anyone else who uses Airtags keep iPhone location services off in general to prevent battery drain? My AirTags ring every few days when I havenât turned on iPhone location.
If my phone is in Bluetooth range shouldnât the Airtag know Iâm close & know it doesnât need to ring?
(Similarly, my wife shouldnât receive a tracking notification if weâre in bluetooth range of each other.)
This âfeatureâ whose only fix is to turn on location services feels anti-privacy.
I couldn't convince ChatGPT that the capital of West Virginia is Huntington (it's not, it's Charleston), until I told it to check wv.gov (which of course it cannot do), which caused it to finally concede the point.
Consider this your periodic reminder that ChatGPT doesn't "think" anything but is just completing sentences with statistically-likely conclusions.
@gruber Caveat to âthe new interest-paying savings accounts are just an alternative to having your Apple Card cash-back go to your Apple Cash accountââ and âthe new savings accounts simply offer Apple Card customers a way to earn interest on cash accounts that heretofore did not pay any interest at all.â
You can transfer money into Apple Savings accounts. At 4.15% interest many will put all their money in it. Thieves can move that $ to Apple Cash with iPhone passcode.
@mastohost Interesting⊠weird⊠thanks for the reply and answer.
A Ramadan soon endsâshout out to front line Muslim workers on their feet all day while fasting for 15 hours.
Iâve been there. The long retail hours. The double shifts as a waiter that pays $2.13/hr. The dry lips & hoarse throat. The thirst. The work so incessant you realize the time to break fast was over an hour ago and you completely forgot to eat. And all the worse if you work outdoors. Exhausting is an understatement.
Thank you. I know that doesnât count for much. But we see you. Godspeed.
