Hi guys, just wanted to take a minute to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year, most of all good health! These days people don't spend much time or thought on some personal words to their friends and family, they just copy and paste some random message and send it on. So I just want to thank you and wish you a happy and fulfilling 2018 - you’re the best gymnastics group anyone could ask for. Helen x

The local paper has a #Christmas contest where kids design ads for the businesses. This one for the Public Utility District is a true winner.

@HG make the most of it - ours insisted on waking us up at 7am, despite them being old enough to appreciate the joy of a lie-in. Pah!

Just walked past an older lady on the phone outside the hospital, gown covered by her coat, cigarette in hand, telling someone that "I've still got trees to climb and people to piss off!".

Mostly I post about writing stuff here but occasionally I post about medicine. Today I’m moved to try to express how my patients restore my faith in humanity. Yesterday, Christmas Eve, I was running very behind in clinic. Many of my patients were very sick and needed extra time. By the time I saw my last patient, they had been waiting quite awhile. But there was no air of frustration when I walked in. Instead I was greeted with a warm smile, calm aura, and at the end of the visit a small gift (of no monetary value - I’m obligated to state). When we wrapped up, the clinic was empty, lights half off, staff had long gone home. After, I sat in the deserted, quiet clinic, reflecting on how every patient wished me a happy holiday, no matter what their health situation was, and how utterly humbling it is that someone in the midst of their illness would take time and effort to bring a gift (which is never expected or needed). I wish somehow to beam this genuine, deep connective, caring aspect of humanity back out into the world. Arriving home very late, my kids are now old enough to understand mom is needed by many people at work, and they made the Christmas cookies themselves. But I didn’t feel guilty this year. I just felt grateful. For my family, my patients. Take care of each other out there and happy holidays to my mastodon family here ❤️

So much for Christmas - boxing day has started early here.

What better way of starting Christmas than with a story of seasonal compassion & care.

A Cardiff couple (essentially) adopted a homeless man who became part of their family & whose life was undoubtedly transformed by their care & compassion. Its an inspiring tale; when you wonder what can *you* do, the answer may be open your heart to the possibility of directly helping others.

Not all our acts of kindness can be like this, but this is a heartening example
