ELI5 The Iran-Contra situation? Because it kind of seems dumb that a country who was holding US hostages for so long. Then the US thought hey lets give them money for guns?

It used to be that when most countries were or in trouble or needed help they would go to the US for help. My question is who does the US go to for help if or when needed?
When did the whole Manifest Destiny quit for the US? Why did it fall out of favor and how come we barely hear about it especially in moving forward as a Society?

How come most news shows say a person got hit by a car? And they are in decent condition. While the same networks says the same thing about someone who got "ranover"
