Please read more about Jerome in the KTVU story below. This type of reporting, about the life of the victim and the impact a crash is having on their community, helps to motivate change.
More than 30 people have been killed in traffic crashes on International Boulevard in the last five years. Oakland and AC Transit have a pilot in place, which added flex posts to parts of the road. These changes have clearly not done enough to prevent tragedy - harder interventions are needed.
Jerome was a dedicated security guard, a pet owner, and "the pillar of strength for his family and community." He rode in Oakland group rides with Traffik Boyz. He was also his family's financial supporter. You can donate to support Jerome's family with funeral expenses here:

We are saddened to learn that another person has been killed crossing E 14th. Jerome Jernigan LaDay was biking home from work Friday night. The driver did not stop.
Sunday, April 13th at 1PM, we will join neighbors at Grand Ave and Park View for a commemorative protest to honor Michael Burawoy and all lives lost to traffic violence
Bring signs, flowers, candles, your friends, family and neighbors, and all your feelings 😢
https://tvrr.substack.com/p/action-on-grand-avenue-april-13th
Oakland is considering a safety redesign of Grand Ave, but plans don't keep pedestrians safe enough and implementation is not soon enough
Every day that goes by without safety improvement to Grand Ave is another day community members risk their lives to cross the street
Join Traffic Violence Rapid Response, WOBO, @BikeEastBay to demand a Grand Ave that is safe for pedestrians

Michael Burawoy's death was a preventable tragedy
Grand has been on Oakland’s High Injury Network for years as one of the 6% of City streets with over 60% of collisions
Senior centers, churches, and schools are separated from Lake Merritt by speeding drivers running over pedestrian signs and treating excessively wide Grand Ave as a highway onramp
People stopped by all evening to leave flowers, notes, and candles for Professor Burawoy, and neighbors joined with their own horror stories of crossing Grand Ave with their kids or their grandparents
A driver killed our neighbor Michael Burawoy last night while he was crossing Grand Ave in the crosswalk in front of Fairyland 😢
Our hearts reach out to his family, friends, students, and everyone else who is mourning this tremendous loss

Current and future Grand Avenue shoppers, please share your thoughts on how Oakland can design the Grand Avenue of your dreams!

🚨 Keep OakDOT independent! 🚨
OakDOT has proven highly effective at delivering critical safety improvements. Merging them with OPW puts this success at risk
Tell Council to reject a hasty merger and push for thoughtful, long-term solutions instead
https://tvrr.substack.com/p/another-day-another-chance-to-do
The cost of inaction is more victims, more cash settlements, higher project costs, lost grant funding, burdened emergency response, and more
It is more expensive to delay the paving program than it is to fund it
Safety can't wait!
@emma @theoaklandside @transpoakland @notjustbikes @bicycling Painted lines and poles added this morning! Success!
@emma @theoaklandside @transpoakland @notjustbikes @bicycling this is great news! Thank you for raising this issue with OakDOT and getting a commitment for a fix
East Bay Car Free Happy Hour is tonight at 5:30pm
Join us at Headlands Brewing at 1280 Gilman St in Berkeley
There is a protected bike lane coming to this intersection soon, but as Steve told us last year, the rate protected bike lanes are being completed in Oakland is too slow
Safety can't wait!
