Hey : we support each other, we stand up for each other, and we show up for each other. Here is how we do that right now, today:

ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Pet

Even if you only read the petition, learning about what the Saskatchewan and Alberta provincial governments are attempting is a step in the right direction. Signing the petition is a step. It is going to be a long journey, but this is not one we can sit out.

my TV is one of those ones that turns more and more tinted purple as it ages, and like......... it doesn't *matter*, so I can't really justify throwing money away replacing a TV that's *basically* fine, it just has shitty color reproduction

but lately it's been going black for a second or so, two or three times a day

and I feel so silly for rooting for it like "yessss, come on, break, force my hand on this, please"

@mogwai_poet well this EXTREMELY has my attention now, thank you!

I'm not even sure yet whether it has everything I want, but the fact that it's open source (and is at least claiming to be contributor-friendly) means that I could even get it there myself if necessary...

2025-12-18

@mogwai_poet in fact I briefly had a gig writing relatively low-level scripts using photoshop's scripting API, and I can absolutely say from experience that *that* API is definitely insufficient (and I get the feeling that it isn't wildly different from the API exposed to plugins and filters)

2025-12-18

@mogwai_poet ImageMagick meets ShaderToy *meets Photoshop*, as in, I do still want a GUI for it too! Photoshop's whole metaphor for dealing with graphical documents is pretty suitable to me (toggling individual parts of a document on and off and seeing the result instantly), it just is lacking all kinds of lower-level features that I'd want, and is also lacking a decent way to add more (every third-party plugin/filter I've ever tried seems to be chafing against its API)

2025-12-18

to me this smells *exactly* like something that would exist as an open-source project somewhere, but in all my googling around, I have yet to actually *find* it

2025-12-18

every "photoshop alternative" out there leans entirely in the direction of being an expressive art tool, which is certainly a fine thing to exist, but I need something leaning in the *other* direction -- nothing else out there seems to have even Photoshop's level of direct data manipulation, and Photoshop itself is *already* insufficient for what I'm always trying to use it for......

2025-12-18

I say "muddling through" because like...... photoshop is still very frustrating in terms of things like not being very forthcoming about what it's doing with regards to color profiles (on the monitor and on the document).... and trying to directly alter the alpha channel, *or* the color data of pixels with an alpha of zero, is PRACTICALLY impossible without a ton of very inconvenient workarounds

2025-12-18

Is there anything resembling a "photoshop for programmers" out there. Something that lets you really sniff around the pixels, but also alter them in nondestructive ways (like you can with photoshop's Smart Objects)

This feels like something that *tons* of graphics programmers would use if it existed, but... I guess photoshop is good *enough* as-is that we're just muddling through with it instead of bothering?

Ho ho!
You came again!
You have nothing else to do?
Or you don't have any friends?
Don't worry!
I don't have friends either!
Ho ho!

I want to ask "why aren't more people talking about this" but I know the answer is "the same reason they aren't talking about covid period", sigh.

2025-12-16

continuing to google around, and stumbled across the existence of "Profi" nasal spray, which isn't a vaccine, but apparently helps prevent several types of airborne disease spread? It KIIIIIINDA has the ring of snake oil, but I can't find anything debunking it, and several studies saying it *does* work and *is* safe.... and I know at least one person who says nasal sprays seem to have helped them...... hmmmmmmm

2025-12-16

how many years away are we from the spray vaccination hitting the market, anyway? they're currently on phase 2... I guess that could still be a few years away?

(I don't mind needles, but i hear that the nasal-spray approach is actually *more effective* at preventing the spread, supposedly?)
