It does not go unnoticed that faculty who invest their labor in some of the most critical societal problems can sometimes lag behind their peers in promotion - that work can be hard, slow, and invisible to scholarly metrics.
All that to say: we should make sure to nominate colleagues who deserve to be recognized by the @sigchi Societal Impact award.
@aquigley my team did place second in the pre-conference pub quiz and earned some champagne (but not directly as that’s not legal in Sweden), and I’m going to ride that high into the next three days of feeling very very old. ;)
23 years into this career and I finally experience imposter syndrome. Except maybe it isn’t so much imposter syndrome as it is being a middle aged woman attending an esports conference.
@drmaxlwilson my insta feed that I use is entirely chefs, musicians, and triathletes and I haven’t allowed any followers, so I can totally post away there and checkmark public engagement. ;)
As a taxpayer-funded scientist, I have a responsibility to publicly communicate research findings but I’m bad at this. I’m on to the next thing and it feels like self promotion, which is hard. Our group had a number of contributions at CHI PLAY last week and I was going to tweet thread them but Twitter was on fire. How should I communicate these broadly?
Also, any thoughts on reframing this as scicomm and not self promotion are welcome. I’ve been particularly bad at this over my career, which is weird because I really appreciate it in others. I see a lot of important new research on Twitter that I would have otherwise missed.
I reviewed 3 #chi2023 papers for 3 different subcommittees (computational interaction, health, games) and got 3 outstanding review commendations. These will go nicely with my 3 rejections. 😆
