Comprehensive, common-sense immigration reform is a priority for House Democrats. The Equal Citizenship for Children Act amends the Child Citizenship Act (CCA) to keep families together and automatically provide citizenship to eligible individuals previously excluded by the CCA. I’m proud to join Congresswoman Clarke in introducing this bill and taking us one step closer to immigration reform that makes sense for everyone who lives in our country.

Today is the fifth anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

It is yet another morning in our country after a mass shooting, this time at Michigan State University.

Today is the fifth anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
It is yet another morning in our country after a mass shooting, this time at Michigan State University.
It is yet another morning of parents frantically calling and texting their children as calls to the phones of the victims go unanswered.
It is yet another morning where we know the name of the killer, but wait for the names of the beloved he took from us.
It is yet another morning of praying for the family and friends of the victims and survivors.
It is yet another morning that, as a life-long educator, my heart breaks for the students who will always be missing a part of their student body.
Scripture tells us that “weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” However, it is yet another morning at a school in the United States with crime scenes, cancelled classes, and grief counselors.
How many sunrises must be spoiled by tears before we act?

When African slaves first came to the Americas, we experienced a cultural genocide.

Countless lives were lost between the continents, carrying with them knowledge, traditions and culture. On plantations across the U.S., our history went unrecorded and our graves unmarked.

Frederick Douglass, one of the most brilliant men in American history, did not know his birth date or birth year with certainty because he was born into slavery.

I am saddened to learn of the passing of Judge Shirley Fulton, a brilliant legal mind, trailblazer and gallant community pillar. She was always dedicated to public service throughout her extraordinary career. As an encouraging mentor and example of excellence, she made an indelible impact on so many people and left our state and nation much better than she found it. My prayers are extended to her family and friends.

Joint Statement by President Joe Biden, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Brazil:

Canada, Mexico, and the United States condemn the January 8 attacks on Brazil’s democracy and on the peaceful transfer of power. We stand with Brazil as it safeguards its democratic institutions. Our governments support the free will of the people of Brazil. We look forward to working with President Lula on delivering for our countries, the Western Hemisphere, and beyond.

Yet again, on January 6th, the far-right has inspired enmity and violence in this sacred temple to democracy.

I am praying for all of us.

If President Biden is handing out medals to people defending democracy, he should add House Clerk Cheryl Johnson to that list.

My fellow HBCU graduate is doing an excellent job.

I just voted - for the 13th time - for Congressman Hakeem Jeffries to be the next Speaker of the House.

For the first time in many votes, Freedom Caucus members did not offer a third candidate. However, Mr. McCarthy still did not receive enough votes this round.

The findings of the January 6th Committee were unambiguous: then-President Donald Trump incited a riot and led an attack on the United States Capitol.

I was there that day with two valued members of my staff. Thousands of staff members were traumatized and in fear for their lives. Hundreds of people were injured, including heroic members of the Capitol Police. Some people died because of Donald Trump’s actions. We should never forget them.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at 12:00 Noon today, when I’ll be casting my seventh vote for Mr. Jeffries for Speaker of the House.

I invite any of my Republican friends who are unsatisfied with their party’s nominee to join me.

I voted no on adjourning the House tonight. We have work to do.

Since the first vote for Speaker, 212 members of the House Democrats have been united behind Hakeem Jeffries. However, over the course of these 6 votes, Mr. McCarthy has lost two supporters.

No matter how this ends, it’s clear House Republicans are incapable of governing.

When we finally elect a Speaker, I look forward to being sworn in and doing what I’ve always done: work my hat off for the people of North Carolina.
