@ianfogg Portability is a big part of this. You cannot readily shift your email from Microsoft to some less hateful provider, even if you can find one. Or your cloud services. This is why I tend to rent bare-metal or OS-only machines, because if I need to move (usually in my case because the company gets bought by New Corporate Overlords) I can do that relatively painlessly.
