@lumi @cccam@radical.town hopefully, they try to do away with requiring phone numbers.

@sagar4000 I think it's a reasonably good step.
@cccam@radical.town @lumi The way I trust Signal is different. I know that Signal does not promise anonymity, so much as privacy. Pretty much everything about them is open source. I use it to stop corporate snooping and casual hoovering by governments.
If my government wanted to get access to those messages, they'd just legally or illegally force me to open my phone.
Every tool for its job, ya know. Plus, it's easy enough to get people to install, like mums.
The ProtonMail Bridge app is now open source! It has also passed an independent security audit. You can find the full details and links to the code and audit report here. https://protonmail.com/blog/bridge-open-source/
@lumi here's an old stackexchange post that goes into more detail: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/49782/is-telegram-secure

Just sharing this to show that even people who built WhatsApp from the ground up don't believe in it anymore and neither should you.
@lumi Nope they've never disclosed it fully. They have kinda said what they use and there are some other implementations of their encryption algorithm, but for all we know they could be using the Enigma cipher. Plus, they hold all the encryption keys, so they could potentially decrypt your messages.
@lumi can't trust something that doesn't disclose their encryption algorithm and doesn't even encrypt chats by default
False positive geniuses!
