Usagi had a look at the drives in my Data Generals and the filters were different. So they wouldn't apply to me unfortunately.

@Elbrar
I'm pretty sure they are nitrile.
And there's why acetone isn't something I like and avoid using. It is really nasty stuff.
I'm not sure how I'm even going to be able to use it for this.
Alright, I bought some acetone and tried that. It gets VERY sticky but it can get it off. Now to figure out a safe way to do this without a fume hood and the ability to scrub around the pins.
@tubetime
I'm thinking I should go get some. I don't like acetone because of how aggressive it can be. But this might require it.
@petrillic
Yeah, nothing like that on it that would make sense as a label for the coating.
@objectrecyler
That would just burn all of the coating at once though. It burns because I have to go through it to the solder.
@petrillic
It would have to be. I have no idea why though, it's just a calculator.
You can see a thick line of it on top of the wide trace here. When I tried to put a totally clean iron tip on it I ended up with that charred blob next to the "O".
I am not sure how to handle this...I'm fairly confident there is a failed solder joint on this PCB but the whole thing looks bad. And I will scorch this coating if I reflow the whole thing.
Oh great, it gets even better. When I tried to reflow the solder it seemed like something on top was burning. Turns out the whole board is coated in something. I just tried cleaning it off of this spot with 91% isopropyl and it did *nothing*. I'm pretty sure this isn't flux because it completely clear. I can only see it like this with a light reflecting off of it at the right angle.
The EXACT SAME device also has this in it which is some of the most beautiful soldering I have ever seen.
The sixties must have been a wild time.
This is the worst soldering I have ever seen on a device and it's not even close.
@kiwa
I absolutely LOVE the cage for the phone. It's easily worth it to have the ability to mount it solid for stuff like this. I don't leave it on all the time because it is kind of huge. But it's also light enough that on the cheapo mic arms it does hold in place very well.
I also have a small tripod I use with it and a different magic arm clamp. I bought that phone specifically for filming and all that stuff has made it much easier and better for the job.
@kiwa
Here is exactly everything I'm using in that shot:
- Arm: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09DP3SWGM
- Phone cage: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D454GQKT
- Phone Cage Clip: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D4M584M7
- Ball head: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09G9PFQCN
To more generally describe it, I'm using a phone cage/case designed specifically for mounting it to things. I have several different mount options for it, here I've put a unique clip for it on the arm so I could more easily remove it between shots.
Wasn't cheap for the Smallrig stuff though
Here it is, the conclusion to my work on restoring my Data General microNOVA minicomputer from 1975!
As of now it is a fully usable machine! There are more things I can do with it, and a few of them I am wrapping up still. But this is going to be it for a while for the big projects while I take a break and work on other things.
But man, a working Data General is quite a sight to behold!
@EposVox
After Doom Eternal's rigid combat system that required specific play style I lost all interest in new Doom games. IMO it adds complexity without adding depth. The color shield parry stuff looks like an even worse version of that that demands more attention.
I found your comment about the giant lonely maps kind of funny though, that's one the the biggest complaints about Doom II. That might be the most original "doom-like" callback in the game!
@zornslemmon This is running "DOS" which is similar to "RDOS". They both predate AOS and are unique to Data General.
I'm too excited not to share this before next week's video because I still doesn't feel real.
That is my Data General microNOVA fully put back together and running flawlessly!
Seeing this working after just having it "around" for so long is wild. A lot of help and luck made this happen. I'm so happy and appreciative that this has been able to come together to this point.
@moonhouse
It's this: https://aaru.app/
I ran into some issues with it on some edge cases the first time I tried it and then forgot to followup on some things. I do need to test it again sometime because it is the only serious attempt I know of to try to rip CDs more completely.
I've got a second channel video today about a project I've been working on off and on to make my imaging and preservation process quicker and easier!
It's a python project to automating ripping CDs/DVDs/Floppies with automatic data derivation.
