And tomorrow. For reasons surpassing understanding we’re flying on Xmas and will rely on people who really shouldn’t have to work.
Ex-professor, physicist, dad, gamer. I used to teach and do experimental particle physics; now I work on robotics software and deal with corporate culture shock. #exac #exacademic

This is all backwards. It's a currency that allows black-market dealings without even the modest democratic protections in the existing financial systems.
"Proof of work" means running computers to solve pointless math puzzles, and rewards those that do more. That ALWAYS benefits those who are either in early (when the puzzles are easier) or those who can afford to buy more compute power.

Or as we're now going to call them: porange
@adhdeanasl aren’t they?
@beka_valentine
Well, when they manipulate democratic processes there isn’t much we can do but try to amass so much popular will they can’t deflect it. It’s not a qualitative problem but a quantitative one.
@chrisgeidner
Narrator: This of course did not happen.
No man is island. But sometimes it feels like I’ve got a fuckton of ocean around.
@Logic_And_Ethics
I love it when people who have not studied a subject in any depth at all weigh in as though their ideas are brilliant.
My dude, you simply have no idea what you're talking about. You need to talk to someone (a real actual person) and adjust your perceptions. Get some help.
@petergleick That one he can have.
Kwanzaa Facts
1. Kwanzaa is a made up holiday.
2. So is every other holiday.
3. Anyone can celebrate Kwanzaa.
4. It was created by Black, (mostly American and Christian*) people in the 1970s to celebrate Black history and the influence of African culture in the African diaspora and to assert the presence of Black people in US culture.
5. Most Black Americans don't celebrate Kwanzaa.
6. It is not a holiday tied to any particular religion.
This exactly. What teachers need IMHO is more tools to help associate the student names to their faces to their thinking.
A teacher needs to know their students to be effective. This puts an upper limit on the number of students one teacher can teach at once. Something like 150 students. I need to know their names, and when I see that name a little about who that is.
Further, a student should have at least 4 or 5 teachers who know them. This is a selection of hopefully trustworthy and supportive adults they can turn to.
Most plans to make school less expensive mess with these numbers.
For my friends out there on the job hunt.
Ouch! The most accurate standard of time in the USA has gone down!
Yup, a bunch of atomic clocks at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado may have lost power - and just to be safe, NIST has stopped broadcasting the time.
It's like someone took this "end times" business too literally.
Luckily NIST has other atomic clocks... and if those fail, there are plenty elsewhere, so we won't permanently lose track of time. But what about right now?
Anyone know the latest news? This report is from 5:18 pm December 19th, Pacific Standard Time:
but if more news shows up, it may appear here:

“Re-evaluate” is kind. I’m more in a mood to never again acknowledge them as people. And my wife is ready to start renting wood chippers.
@TheBreadmonkey
It’s mostly tinsel, but they threw in some holly for flavor?
@StillIRise1963
Oh, I think a lot of people are doing just that. They’re ignoring math about jobs, epidemiology, temperature, and tariffs. It’s a whole plague of ignoring math.
@blogdiva
Uh...
In American English, it is generally accepted that
million = 10^6
billion = 10^9
trillion = 10^12
I believe this is used everywhere, talking about rich people, budgets, or other numbers.
I dont' think the reason billionares are evil is because we have wrong order of magnitude on their name.
