@boomtownpodcast Puttin' on the Ritz?
I'm an underachiever. HS/college years in the 80s. New Wave rules, man. "We’re going to win this war not by fighting what we hate, but saving what we love." — Rose Tico. Le temps de la purification sauvage des oligarques est arrivé. Stop burning fossil fuels. Books, movies (big fan of noir and screwball comedies), history; grandchild of Armenian genocide survivors. I post a lot about Armenia and its concerns. #HoyaSaxa
@boomtownpodcast Puttin' on the Ritz?
@Jaden3 As described by an African American intellectual, living in the USA as a black person from a historical perspective, is like playing Monopoly and forced to circle the board 20 times not allowed to collect income, make choices, or buy property (after escaping being property), but frequently going to jail because of living under an economic thumb (paraphrased). 😔
@Holberg that's too bad. It seems to me maybe this had been the case for a while with his films
Last one I really liked was Moonrise Kingdom
@Holberg How was it?
True humanitarian disaster is unrolling in #Russia as the authorities are switching off mobile Internet in places even very distant from the front line to stop Ukrainian UAVs. It has the unintended consequence that without mobile Internet you can’t buy vodka.
Since 2019 Russia introduced very strict regulations, according to which each sale of alcohol is registered in real-time (!) in an on-line system run by tax administration. This regulation is intended to enforce time restrictions on alcohol sales, so you can’t buy it after 23:00 and before 08:00, plus many more - for example on some holidays, in some locations etc.
If Internet doesn’t work, shops can’t register sales so they can’t legally sell alcohol. Risking huge fines and losing license, they won’t even offer “delayed registration” and widespread snitchery makes it really difficult to bypass these regulations.
In May 1963, I was 9 years old and unaware of many events happening out there in the wide, wide world. Such as the Children’s Crusade in Birmingham, Alabama that month. Children, high school age and younger, even age 7, skipped school to go march for Civil Rights. More than 1,000 school children were arrested in that peaceful protest. The photo shows an officer, his police baton under his arm, as he takes signs away from children in that march. “Can a man love God and hate his brother” asks one sign. Another proclaims “All are One in Christ Jesus.” Odds are, that man went to church that Sunday morning. The pastor may very well, as was common then in the former Confederate States, have preached against desegregation, integration, and protestors. One famous sermon in 1954, by Carey Daniel, pastor of First Baptist Church of West Dallas, Texas, was titled “God the Original Segregationist.”
In the comments, I will post a news article from 2022 about a leader of the Children’s Crusade, Gloria Washington Lewis-Randall. It goes into her experiences, the effect on her life, and her life since.

I still have the cassette
I've never been there, but I'm hoping there's a good breakfast diner at the Coffee County and Bacon County line in Georgia, if I ever end up there.
@Dseitz Virginia has been similar the last month.
