Andrew Barker

Small cog in a large machine.

At work, I try to make linear algebra routines faster.

At home, I have half-baked thoughts about transit and urbanism and stuff

2025-06-24

@bryan Humor me: what's wrong with the location? Superficially seems okay, reasonably good access to transit, on the river, not displacing some existing established neighborhood...

@atsuzaki what's wrong with eating out on saturday?

I hope this email finds you before we do.

@steele I intend this to sound actually hopeful rather than grim, but our hope is not in democracy.

2025-06-19

@enobacon Yes! Why would I have more? Sounds confusing.

2025-06-18

@bryan Congratulations!

@glennklockwood.com Isn't the "always" here exactly the contested point in the "alignment" discussion?

2025-06-18

@enobacon I *always* want this instead of a new window. Who wants a new window? I am flabbergasted, this is like the blue/white dress thing where I'm shocked there are even people in the world who disagree with me.

King Lear (Act 2, Scene 2)

@mathowie I remember being so excited to go to that place

2025-06-10

@mossyfoot I do not exactly disagree, but that budget would get you two housing units if you were very lucky.

2025-06-10

@jedbrown @hpcnotes Right, I don't disagree with you really about anything. But to @hpcnotes point, if we didn't have double precision we would work on building great confidence in our preconditioners, among other things. It's not like computational science would stop.

2025-06-10

@jedbrown @hpcnotes People do simulations with 10^9 elements, so condition number (at least) 10^18, with double precision hardware. Are they emulating quad precision? If not, how are they doing it?

2025-06-04

@chrisamaphone I agree. It is significantly worse than the books but still entertaining.

What’s the weirdest, most obscure instruction on a currently-in-production cpu?

@mwshook hate it when that happens
