I’d be far more excited about the new M2 Mac Mini if I could run any flavor of Linux on it. Amazing machine/price ratio. But most of what I want to do involves Linux. Could you imagine Proxmox on that thing?

@ohmsk yes, learning TrueNAS Scale is built on Debian makes it worth it to me. Similar to Proxmox being built on Debian.

Minutes later…I have Docker enabled, my user added to the “docker” group and Pi-hole running in Docker. Success.

Sadness.

I’ve added TrueNAS to my list. I like to manage ZFS directly via the command line, so I was holding out on this one.

Installed and setup NixOS on Proxmox. So many searches to get setup. Lots of config options on this one, but I’m sure it’s quite powerful considering the “reproducible build” focus.

At this point I’m measuring Linux installs in time to `tailscale up` and/or time to `neofetch`. NixOS took quite a bit to get to there considering I’m a noob on this distro.

@sluongng @grahamc ended up installing the nixos-plasma iso because I had no clue how to setup NixOS using the minimal iso.

Time to `tailscale up` and `neofetch` wasn’t too bad considering the learning curve of setting up and learning how to install packages to my user directly from the command line.

@sluongng @grahamc downloading from URL right now to Proxmox to spin up a test server. Are there any “getting started with NixOS” docs or blogs you can point me to?

@jayroh not yet. Intel Macs. I do want to play with Asahi Linux though. That’s on my list.

I’ve been playing with Linux…on Mac hardware. Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Rocky, Alma, and even straight up Proxmox with ZFS via Thunderbolt attached storage. Mac Mini, iMac, and Mac Pro so far.
