...just staccato bursts of fear, negativity and big important sounding words with people wearing the cosplay of respectability. All the tropes reinforced. Interspersed with shiny distractions.

Too distracting and jumpy to analyse correctly, playing hard on the quickest most reflexive response and working to ensure that the reflexive response is white, patriarchal, colonial.

It is abusive manipulation.

Fog delayed flight out of Bendigo...

...in airports I see "normal" news and omfg is it ever a stream of the worst, most regressive, most breathlessly hyperventilated, substance-free takes on everything.

Mainstream media needs to be disbanded.

Hey Fedi, I need help again.
I'm still unemployed, and trying to fix that, but I still have rent and bills, and next week is particularly rough.

I have a phone/internet bill due on the 16th ($150), a water bill due on the 19th ($250), and then rent at the end of the week ($500). I can probably be a little late on the water bill if I have to, but I can't risk the phone/internet (I need them to get a job) or the rent (because life).

So I need about $900 in total. Please help if you can, or boost if you can't.

I'm sorry I keep begging, I've run out of stuff to sell that wouldn't put me in a worse position without it, and just don't know what else to do.

On the other hand, if you know anywhere looking to hire a C developer, Javascript developer, webdev, unix sysadmin, storeperson, cleaner, dishwasher or whatever, either remotely or in Brisbane Australia, let me know? Even just once-off odd-jobs would do for now.

If you can help financially though, that'd be huge. Thankyou.

50/900

...packing for Brisbane aerial survey work tomorrow (3 week shift, probably not all in Brisbane)

...found a secondhand wing paddle for a non insane price (rare!), bought it, went for a kayak. It's good! Although technically demanding. Gonna be honing technique or swimming ๐Ÿคฃ

Just so we are all clear and to reiterate a position I've held for decades - this is a hill I will die on:

Doctoral candidates are not students.

If this is the case for you, what are you failing people at in undergrad and honours/masters levels - the prerequisites to doctoral candidature?

#academia

2025-06-13

@jimbob the first mistake is "student". Who is the student when you're teaching your advisors (who have been your peers for years) about what is going on? Not sure about what is happening in undergrad these days, we learned how to read papers and write papers back then...

And I don't see any academics working for the passion....

@SeaFury

2025-06-13

@SeaFury I was the opposite. After a few months my advisor team said well youre way beyond us now let us know how its going and if you need help...

...I had already 2 solid years and 2 expeditions experience and a couple of papers before starting...

And I totally agree about extensions etc. It's not meant to be a psychologically damaging experience.

2025-06-13

@SeaFury yah idk. I did 4.5 FTE while parenting, being a main income earner, and eventually working full time as a bicycle mechanic for two years. Oh btw we didn't have data to tell the story properly until year 3.

UTAS are just insane. Even their rockstar fully supported folx take longer than 3yr.

Yeah I don't know how old you are, but all of the world's "problems" that have been going on for your whole life, the problems world leaders have been "trying to solve" are never going to be solved because frankly, nobody's trying one whit to "solve" problems they fucking profit from.
Until we eat them all, nothing's going to change except for the worst.

boop beep another job rejection today.

Since winter is coming have a photo of me doing stuff I'm not qualified for and have no experience at doing according to employers now ๐Ÿคท

Having spent 3 years negotiating for time and equipment, here I am doing the first application of a robotic total station to create floe-local drifting coordinate systems and georeference everything on East Antarctic pack ice. Part of the #SIPEX2012 expedition.

#seaice #climate #innovation

A person in a hi viz vest and yellow/black clothing carrying a backpack and looking at a handheld instrument. The person stands in front of a surveying tripod holding a robotic total station. A few boxes are in front of the person, a red box for the total station, yellow box holding a large battery and warming equipment (a hot water bottle), custom made by the person in the photo. The black box holds extra equipment that isn't cold sensitive. On the far left a pole with a GNSS antenna and total station prism is stuck into snow. The foreground and background are white - a foggy day on snow, in the East Antarctic pack ice zone. Photo by Dr. Jan Lieser, subject is Dr. Adam Steer.

I still don't have a job, or even another interview, and I need to beg for money again, even more because bills as well as rent, and I don't want to keep doing this, but there's no other way I can think of. One of these job applications has to stick eventually.

Here's my very important open data morning freestyle:

I don't want your fancy pipeline
Hand me a simple text file
No need for a bloated workflow
I'm in for a low tech game show

That's it, thanks for your attention. Now I'll add a bunch of hashtags, and you can get on with your day, which I hope will be as sweet as pleasant.

@jimbob ...all very good practices btw...

...would actually be cool if we taught them in "how to computer", like "ok you want a computer here are the basics before you can have one"

I hope the point is clear ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž

@jimbob ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

"just use linux" right?

...first teach people how to separate your OS partition from *everything else*

...next teach how to make a bootable USB

..then assume every OS update could end in a wipe clean and reinstall...

...and still end up in graphics driver labyrinths!
