@vanderwal oh that’s awesome news, just made my day. I’d love to catch up when you’re out here!
@vanderwal I’m catching up on Mastodon and whoa, we never talked about you being in my hood so regularly during my formative 91X years. That’s some real local trivia, right up there with rolled tacos and California burritos.
Did you ever listen to any Rocket From The Crypt?
@nazhamid I’m so sorry.
Hello from the desert. Biking around and camping in Blair Valley to mark the spring equinox.
@vanderwal yeah, I’ve had good luck with Apple Music’s automatic playlists too, especially the Get Up mix. I don’t know if they’ve made a recent leap in algos or whether all of my tagging into manual playlists is finally paying off.
@motoridersd Silo finally got good by the end. Man, S2 was a slog compared to the first. Here’s to hoping it was all setup and prep for a strong S3 & 4. They just got green lit for two more seasons and I’m hoping it’s one of those they shoot back to back like they’re doing with The Bear.
@artlung so prescient. I quoted the lyrics in a piece about the new space race:
@nazhamid that’s a good disclaimer about not being able to tell. I’m someone that looks pretty able-bodied, especially when I’m all kitted out in cycling gear, so people are surprised to find out that I’ve got a gimpy knee that can barely handle even just a single flight of stairs. You never know what someone’s story is!
@gregorlove.com @artlung @ciccarello.me oops, sorry for the belated reply. Yeah, that looks fun! Let’s do it.
@vanderwal that sounds like sci-fi. I totally need to get one for my bike tires. I went tubeless earlier this year and although I don’t get flats anymore (no tubes means no punctures) I do get little nicks that result in slow leaks, which can still leave me stranded.
@jenschuetz wow, that’s a lot on your plate.
Day 1 down and was fun as all get out. Positively overflowing with fun, connection and inspiration.
Day 2 of jamming on #indieweb ideas is next. Thanks to Joe for organizing and herding these cats!

@vanderwal @artlung @benji Astro’s cool but if I could give 2023 me some advice, it’d be to boot up a simple site in a few different frameworks before deciding. I have a feeling I might have gone with something focused on blogging like @eleventy or a CMS for a digital garden like @getkirby or even something else altogether. I was seduced by Astro’s gorgeous docs, clear tutorials and active forums, they’re truly best in class, but the thing you get a feel for over time is that it’s definitely more aimed at React devs that are sailing downwind to plain javascript and probably just making simple marketing pages or developer docs, rather than hobbyist writing. I’ve had to skill up massively just to do things that come stock in other frameworks, simple things like making an RSS feed or tagging.
Right now I’m ok with the overhead because I’m not publishing much and am learning a lot while in tinker mode, but still might end up switching after I take my own advice and spin up a few alternate instances to test out.
Neighbors made brownies to welcome us to the hood. Unreal. I thought that only happened in the movies?
@vanderwal weird coincidence – I never heard of Style Council until last weekend, which was our first weekend at the new place and so now it’ll forever be the soundtrack to our new chapter.
I remember exactly where I was because I turned to my wife in the car when they came on the First Wave station on Sirius and said “that’s a great name for a band, let’s hear if they’re any good”
Hear hear, that was amazing. Thank you to @artlung for hosting and @Meyerweb for his insights!
Can’t tell you how much I geeked out while the CSS godfather was tinkering with my personal site. The 1999 version of my inner self from when I made my first website just fainted in disbelief.

@vanderwal @artlung totally. CSS is such a huge performance boost (except for some animations, like @benji found out recently) that even the React world is coming around. The javascript pendulum is swinging back towards a “no JS by default” streamlined approach with frameworks like Next and Astro.
@nazhamid could be a cognitive falllacy? Where it’s actually all EVs that speed but it feels like it’s only Teslas because there’s more of them. E.g. I’ve seen a couple of Polestars haul ass on backroads.
@vanderwal CSS has come a long way. Just today @artlung and I were joking about feeling like unfrozen cavemen lawyers because the browsers have built in so much in the last decade without us realizing it. Just a handful of simple little declarations do what used to take giant frameworks and specialized expertise!
@nazhamid totally. We used to say BMW drivers were the worst on the road but it’s often Teslas these days. I don’t know if they even mean to go that fast or realize that they are? It’s like a cheat code for physics.
