Hi all,
I am moving my account to our company instance
See you on the other side :)

Hi all,
I am moving my account to our company instance
See you on the other side :)

Yes, the per IP limit is a major issue if multiple people are hitting the server from the same IP (think university students!)
Even gets worse if your app is server side then all your requests come from the same IP.
If Mastodon wants to have a lot of innovation, there needs to be a better anti-spam solution than per IP limits.
I understand why it exists for unauthenticated requests, but authenticated requests should be on per token basis not IP
@atomicpoet I wonder when will the winklevoss brothers create their social app? 😉

@atomicpoet @Gargron
Actually at tweepsmap, we are all moving to our own instance shortly
I see Mastodon more like an email server, I think all companies will head that way.
Perhaps a managed hosting solution will be more mature and do multi-tenant setups, so companies can have turnkey installs like Google Apps, or Office 365, but for now we will stick with managing our own
@whatthecj
I had team members create an instance for the company, so learned few things
The biggest problem is seeing replies by others. Your instance will only see replies from "known accounts", and if you have a small instance it will have small amount of known accounts, so you miss out.
Relays help solve much (if not all of) this problem.
Few other cons:
2. Cost
3. Maintenance
4. Setup was a pain even for devs!
@atomicpoet
to be honest, a lot of these things can be solved with changes to infrastructure and architecture.
I tried to offer @Gargron help few times but got no response, I think he is just bombarded with notifications so he misses a lot of offers for help
@whatthecj yeah, I am about to go to our own server
This instance is slow and unreliable
@atomicpoet @picard
I know you know, Chris, I used your app too :)
@picard @atomicpoet
I was going to say the same thing! Even when the founder doesn't like the concept, developers can build it, and the founder can't ban their app!
You have no idea how many ropes we have to jump through when we built on Twitter, every time we invent something not done before, we have to parse the developer agreement and make sure nothing could be interpreted as we are violating the rules.

@soffronoff Sorry, the avatar threw me off and you didn't have your last name so I thought it was all anonymous, my apologies

@soffronoff sorry if I made assumptions, but that's the only thing I got from this thread, Dave said he prefers the convo here and we will see less twitter link from him, he also expressed preference for "open platforms" and then he was attacked for having a "neutral stance", very uncalled for!
Like I said, the world is huge with so many dimensions, Twitter (despite its major flaws) is currently far better than Mastodon for non-tech news.
We need to make it better here, not keep it bad, peace
@soffronoff and BTW I normally don't engage people with no real names, but this thread really pissed me off.
I am working so hard to make this platform useful for the average person but then I see a lot of users who just want to make it a single issue social netowork, the elonhate club
Anyway, enjoy the rest of your weekend
@soffronoff I and many other developers are what made Twitter what it is today. Most of us are now focusing to build on Mastodon (You can Google me, and Dave too!)
Perhaps you think I "don't align" with your "values" because my values are not single dimensional.
Mastodon is mostly useless unless you want to deprive me and others of our worlds and adhere to yours
The world is not entirely English speaking, we are not all white or nameless people. We live real lives and have our cultures too!
@soffronoff but judging is counterproductive
If the first encounter for me here is to be called "morally bankrupt" by someone who only created an account a month ago, I would simply leave.
Clearly I have invested a lot here to leave, but for a casual user, they might just move to Post, Instagram TikTok, so many options
If you want to make this an alternative, don't force people off.
The world is diverse, and not everyone thinks exactly the same as you, I could say the same about so many topics
@soffronoff and again, Twitter despite it's flaws is far more useful today than Mastodon is, like I said earlier, there is hardly anything useful here besides tech news here
And technologically speaking, Mastodon very immature, just look at the trends here, absolutely useless
Stop judging people, let as many people here as possible then it will be much better.
@soffronoff I am one of the people building here, and have made a significant impact already, and will continue.
But at the same time, I absolutely hate it when people here judge others. Joining this platform last Nov or Dec doesn't make one morally superior, there were millions here before you, and Twitter wasn't a heaven the week before you left it!
I know many people who were driven off from here for this attitude, unfortunately.
Heck, I left an instance that only allowed posting in English!
@jakobdorof @davew @soffronoff @buck
He was right, because they don't
You are not better than the worst of Twitter trolls
The biggest irony, is that you are attacking the very people building this platform, while all you have ever done is trolling and attacking people
My block list here has 1 account, now it will have 2
