Eid Mubarak to all celebrating! 🎉
It’s depressing how many universities, including my grad school and former undergrad, are all cutting so many of their programs, especially in the humanities. We’ve really abandoned the liberal arts, and really higher education as a whole, in the US (and elsewhere)
[Feeling bored and trying to go viral] Yo I still can’t believe there are people that don’t have internal monologues. like they don’t hear their thoughts at all thats lowkey crazy
Figures the one night I sleep early there’s an aurora borealis visible across most of the US *sigh*
Chag Pesach sameach to all celebrating!
If I’ve learned anything in academia, and life in general, it’s that trust is far more important, and far more catastrophic to lose, than “respect”
All the hard-earned respect in the world can prove worthless in an instant if people learn they can’t trust you
Me studying for quals tomorrow
I’m so used to campist mindsets on Twitter that I’m sometimes surprised when someone I know irl who’s pro-Palestine turns out not to be an Assadist or Uyghur genocide denier.
Or when someone who supports Ukraine and Taiwan turns out to not be pro-Azerbaijan or pro-Israel
This comes on the eve of two friends (who aren’t in regular contact with each other) being out with Covid within a day of each other. Here’s wishing them a speedy recovery and hoping it doesn’t spread further 🙏
have a confession: Every once in a while, I feel weird being the only one still wearing a mask, and question if I should still be doing this.
Then, when another Covid outbreak happens every month or so and I’m one of the few not to catch it, I remember why
Happy New Year everyone! Here’s hoping 2024 is mildly less shitty than 2023 😊
Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!🎄
To be honest, I hate grad school life, and even though I’m only one semester in, not a day goes by that I don’t wonder if I would be happier and more fulfilled if I quit
New word family!
https://www.aidanem.com/word-family-letter.html
There are two words from Sumerian whose descendants are still used all over the world today—<gi>: "reed" (what they wrote with), and <dub>: "tablet" (what they wrote on).
Words like English "letter", Arabic "أدب" <ʾadab>: "literature, learning", Armenian "դպրոց" <dprocʿ>: "school", Malay "daftar": "list", etc.
Just in case you wonder how important Sumerian writing was in world history 😄
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
