I think one of the worst pieces of advice I was given when I started creating content was to keep my political views to myself so I don't alienate people.

The truth is, I'm more than happy to alienate anybody who is bigoted, abusive, and generally a shit human being. I wouldn't get along with them outside of the internet; why should I pander to them online?

This is the 100 year anniversary of humans having an idea of what the heck the sun and all the stars actually are. If you had asked a leading astronomer in 1925 what the sun was, they would say that it's basically the same as Earth, but very hot.

In Cecilia Payne's doctoral thesis she was the first to say, from spectral data, that the sun was overwhelmingly made of hydrogen and helium.

It was later described as "the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy".

Say for the sake of argument, you wander into a local university lecture given by a professor of quantum physics titled "PHYS 201, Quantum Mechanics II: Key Experiments and Wave-Particle Duality".

Not being an expert, or even a student of quantum physics, you sit unhappily through the 2 hour lecture, upset by how little of it feels intuitive, concerned by how much of it seems to fly in the face of your understanding about the way the world works, and generally not really understanding most of the math or jargon. At the end, you raise your hand. The professor calls on you, asking your opinion.

"I didn't like it," you say to the professor.

The professor, encouraged by years of social norms, inquires why not.

You give the following reasons:
- The lecture hall was too cold
- Your voice is annoying
- My tummy hurts

The professor, unfazed, rightly dismisses these points as irrelevant to the lecture topic. You both go your separate ways, and the fields of mathematics and physics continue on undisturbed.

Why bring this up?

Because while "I don't like it" is certainly relevant to a chef who cooked your dinner, to a musician who just performed a concert for you, or even to a politician who just laid out their political platform, it is completely and totally irrelevant to the scientist or student who studies gender.

"I don't like that gender is not binary" does not, in fact, need refuting. "The left can't meme" is not, actually a valid argument against gender science. "You're so condescending" is not, actually, relevant to this topic. "Trans make my tummy hurt" is not, actually, a statement about trans people. It is a statement about YOU.

Trans, nonbinary, and genderfluid identities exist, and will continue to exist, regardless. And your opinion about that will have zero impact on the overwhelmingly vast body of science collected over the last century confirming and validating their existence. All it means is that you, a layman, are not equipped to listen to the lecture, and that is not an insult or a put-down. It is a recognition of your humanity.

When we talk about trans rights, we do not owe you a warm and inviting lecture hall. We do not owe you a polite and charming tone of voice. We do not owe you sympathy for how your bigotry makes you feel inside.

You owe US your respect. Because we know and understand this topic and you do not.
