This shows that onshore wind can play a much bigger role in the decarbonisation of Europe’s energy system than we thought.
This report introduces our new JRC ENSPRESO 2 data set, building on the original ENSPRESO project (ENergy Systems Potential Renewable Energy SOurces potentials). ENSPRESO 2 operates at an unprecedented resolution of 1 km2, incorporating newly available wind energy data sets and reflecting recent technological advances in wind energy technology, research and practices.
New data reveals EU onshore wind potential twice as high as previously estimated!
To meets its ambitious climate targets, the EU needs to install 200 GW of new wind energy capacity by 2030 – a huge challenge. But do we actually have enough wind in the right places?
Our new report on Europe’s onshore wind energy potential provides a resounding YES to this question. And for many scenarios, the economically viable potential of onshore wind is twice as high as previously estimated.

Despite these challenges, there have been some positive signals for the geothermal sector. Several EU countries have created national geothermal roadmaps with ambitious targets (such as Ireland , the Netherlands , Poland, Croatia, France, and Germany ) to make investment in geothermal projects more attractive and encourage their development.
Compared to other renewable energy sources, the production of geothermal energy is associated with technical and economic risks. The deployment of geothermal faces challenges including high upfront costs, a lack of knowledge and of geological data, and the availability of skilled labour.
When used for heating, geothermal offers efficiency gains by supplying heat directly.
The launch of geothermal projects would create increased employment opportunities and local value production. Geothermal processes also produce lithium as a by-product, enhancing our access to this critical raw material.
Challenges
Geothermal energy development in the EU has been slower compared to other renewable energy sources due to several challenges and obstacles.
EU measures to scale-up geothermal energy
A major advantage of geothermal energy, compared to other renewable energy sources, is that it is not dependent on the weather. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), geothermal energy could be a factor in stabilising electricity grids as it helps offset the risks associated with an energy system based on the variable supplies of other renewable energy sources.

Commission launches consultation on draft methodology for low- carbon hydrogen
The European Commission is today launching a 4-week call for feedback on the draft delegated act which clarifies the methodology for evaluating the emission savings of low-carbon hydrogen and fuels.
The EU is reducing its energy dependencies.The share of renewable energy in the EU increased to 46% in the first quarter of 2024, outplaying fossil fuels.The 🇪🇺 electricity market report also shows that the share of fossil fuels fell significantly to 25%, compared to 31% in the first quarter of 2023.Read the full report: https://eu.smh.re/0Ugd
