Dystopia notwithstanding, Ring's commercial about using their surveillance to find lost pets makes no sense.

They say 10M pets are lost per year & their service finds "more than 1 dog per day." So let's even say generously 500 dogs per year.

Out of 10M lost pets, they want Americans to commit privacy suicide for a .005% success rate???

"We fail 99.995% of the time! Let us violate your privacy!" is a helluva way to burn $10M in ads and destroy your brand.

I'm uninstalling my RING today.

@heptag0n @alternativeto Matrix is close for properties of "all users are addressable on the platform" (converse to instanced servers like Slack, Mattermost) and "easy channel joining based on topic". For recurring calls with friends and no managing your own infrastructure, I suggest looking at Signal (group DMs & calls), Mumble/Teamspeak, or Matrix

@steve @humanhorseshoes if you want a decentralized messenger, check out Session and the chatmail apps like Delta Chat or Arcane

@steve @humanhorseshoes do you have an objective to avoid anything that uses AWS? Or specifically for handling private communications?

@DenverSec does the meetup extend to topics like data privacy and digital sovereignty? How about federated and decentralized software?

These flags would be so useful in daily life when you're having one of those days and want to let people know.

'I am dragging my anchor.' 'I require a tug.' 'Stop carrying out your intentions.'

And my personal favourite 🚩: 'I am on fire; keep clear of me.'

A book of old fashioned naval flags:

The texts per flag are labeled -

KEEP WILL CLEAR LOW SPEED

I AM CARRYING DANGEROUS GOODS

I AM MANOEUVRING WITH DIFFICULTY

I AM DISABLED; COMMUNICATE WITH ME

I HAVE A PILOT ON BOARD

I AM DIRECTING MY COURSE TO PORT

I AM ON FIRE: KEEP CLEAR OF ME

I HAVE SOMETHING TO COMMUNICATE

MY VESSEL IS STOPPED

NO (NEGATIVE)

MAN OVERBOARD

ALL PERSONS TO REPORT ON BOARD

MY ENGINES ARE GOING FULL SPEED ASTERN

KEEP CLEAR OF ME

YOU ARE RUNNING INTO DANGER

I REQUIRE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

STOP CARRYING OUT YOUR INTENTIONS

I AM DRAGGING MY ANCHOR

I REQUIRE A TUG

ANSWERING PENNANT

If you consider going to the US, whatever the reason, don’t, for your own safety.

If you consider organizing an event to the US for an international community, you’re putting people’s lives at risk.

If you want an English-speaking environment for an international event, pick Canada or the UK. Heck, even in Scandinavian countries everyone speaks English.

@rayocentric if we could get people to adopt physical token devices like yubikeys and made it trivially easy for web service providers to bolster their login process with them, I believe we wouldn't need password managers. You are right in that they are a band-aid, not an end solution to digital security

@rayocentric if you are using strong passwords and they exist in your head, then you are good to go and not going to benefit from a password manager. I like having a distinct strong password for every login and can't keep all of those in my head. I keep them in a local vault encrypted with GPG and sync the vault with my phone. Cloud-based password managers are not for me, but I see it as still a better option than post-its, passwords.xls, and weak/reused passwords based on personal details

New, from me: The Kimwolf Botnet is Lurking in Corporate, Govt. Networks

A new Internet-of-Things botnet called Kimwolf has spread to more than 2 million devices, forcing infected systems to participate in massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and to relay other malicious and abusive Internet traffic. Kimwolf’s ability to scan the local networks of compromised systems for other IoT devices to infect makes it a sobering threat to organizations, and new research reveals Kimwolf is surprisingly prevalent in government and corporate networks.

@technically_good thank you for doing this. I've been mulling starting new "computer clubs" in my area to advocate benefits of reclaiming personal data privacy. I was going to start a local chapter of EFA but I see EFF just recently closed the program. Would love to read or collab on an article about local data privacy orgs

Less welcome is the discovery that when Google made the Fast Pair Bluetooth pairing standard and told developers that their devices should ignore requests when not in pairing mode, most of them... err, ignored that bit. And now you can re-pair anybody's headphones to your device, eavesdrop on them, deafen them, and even track them in Find Hub.

My headphones are on the vulnerable list...
