Lots of moderately fast moving scattered clouds. Sun occulted and then revealed in the run up to totality. The sun behind clouds when totality began, and dang it was crazy how dark it got - like civil twilight.
But, hallelujah! The cloud passed and we were able to get a very nice view of totality.
Flipping autocorrect! THIS is the fundamental Tennant of all religions. I am a Whoniversalist.
John tries to downplay Christian involvement in the zealot movement that was pushing open rebellion against Rome. But canonically, one of the 12 disciples is always identified as a member of the "Zealot Party." So again, with regard to Rome, it is "WE" not "they."
So, after all is said and done, HAPPY EASTER to all who celebrate. And don't let the ignorant and hateful hijack the scriptures for anti-Jewish hate.
WE not they.

Again, John is writing very soon after the Roman destruction of the temple in 70 CE. Roman persecution of both traditional Jews and early Christian Jews and gentiles is rampant. John, more than any other Gospel writer, goes out of his way to excuse the Romans and Pilate. Putting the blame for Jesus' execution squarely on "the Jews." But remember point 1, Christians need to read that as "WE."

This Gospel is written at a time when practitioners of Christianity are first starting to think of themselves as separate from Judaism. This, it must be acknowledged, also can be used to fuel ant-Jewish sentiment. But we really remember that the vast majority of Christians, including Roman Catholics and all mainline protestants, believe Jews were, are, and always will be the chosen people of God per the first covenant, and that covenant is forever.

Some other context to help with the Gospel of John:
John is a very Greek (in the context of second century Palestine) writer writing primarily for a Greek audience. The word used for Jew is an adjective and frequently used without a noun so the context is important. It could mean Jewish People, or Jewish Priests, or Jewish Pharisees. Context matters. But in most English translations, this is just rendered as "the Jews..." and modern readers are immediately in an uncomfortable place.

I just cannot stress enough that Christian texts have plenty of instances where the words can be improperly used to foster anti-Jewish hate, And WE Christians have to be honest and contrite about that. And take extra steps to counter such hate and bad theology.

I was taught the first, and most important, point to keep in mind is that when John speaks of the "Jews" calling for Jesus' execution, this should be read as the "God's people" calling for Jesus' execution. Since a fundamental tenant of Christianity is that Jesus expanded the definition of God's chosen people to be Jews + those who follow Jesus, all Christians need to read these passages as "WE" called for Jesus' execution. Not "they." "WE."

Last Friday was Good Friday for most western Christian churches. Like most, the readings of Jesus' arrest, trial, and execution involve heavy use of the Gospel of John. This book in particular has been rightly blamed for inspiring anti-Jewish sentiment over the years.
And I have a few things to say about that.

Young man is double majoring in mechanical engineering and music performance. This pic is a few years old, I need a new one. He’s a pro now, getting paid to play at different churches around town when they do brass.
(Not really a response to your comment, but I don’t turn down a chance to brag)
