it's journey of discovery, maybe developing abstract concepts from it is not your thing, but the experience is still the same. The female image I grew up with was amputated. So is the male imagery i resorted to for a bit. And it hurts. Both ways. Both stereotypes are incredibly limiting.

Sure is. I do believe we have to obliterate any and every limitation around gender roles. I want to feel my femininity, softness and that part that I tried to express with the punk- outfits as ONE person. And having a way to reflect our multilayered truth that reaches deep, as art does for me, will help with that.

watching a video about a collector of abstract expressionism who collects art by women. Camera following him through his palace. That's not where our art needs to be. It needs to be in a public museum It needs to be accessible to us. So, some rich guy is now making more money cus they started buying art by females when it was cheap. What good does that do? That's not what I wanted from "cultural change".

when later I wanted to explore all the female stuff and had a baby etc. it was incredibly difficult to get out from under the imagery about being exploited, being an object of desire...
When delving into softeness and giving and feeling the milkflow from your breasts, feeling all the very female traits of your body... I did feel strength in this but the imagery of being an object of male desire was overwhelming.

when I was a teen, I resorted to male imagery. Cut my hair very short, wore boots and punk outfits, never talked about my vulnerability.. That's because I could never find any images of strong women I could identify with. I could not match my need to escape the powerlessnes connected to my gender with any female expressions I could see.
That's like an amputation. Akin to a black person using skin bleach.
We need art by women in prominent places.

all my life I have received inspiration, strength and support by seeing the art of other women. It's been important to me. Most of that art being withheld from me, because I'll never be able to find it, is in effect like a book ban.
