Growing up, we had a fancy brass barometer from a ship by the door. I've decided I need one now, so at least I understand why my head feels like I'm under miles of ocean right now.
bri(ching) experiment, hyperbolbri, librar* worker, likes weird noises and weird jokes, really really really Winnipeg. Some forms of Open Access & skull comms, copyrights from the lefts. ☠

cops are cutting off the occupied building from the plaza outside it, most people are in the plaza, so a dozen are now totally on their own and people seem to be barricading them in from the back to they can't fall back and rejoin the others. ugh i am so scared for these students
@anelki in Canada, everyone went to hosted everything (even OS) and now there are like three libraries left with developers. It is grim.
@anelki if you do... And want to join the regular season school comms shit talking discord... Let me know
@anelki @adr @justinling haha, sorry, was loading up an actual reply when I hit the facetious yes button
@djfiander @adr I literally have been panic planning the last few months of "what is my plan for the next 5 years when higher Ed completely ceases to function and ALSO there are no jobs with the feds"
@anelki @adr @justinling (independent Canadian news with a enviro bent. So, you know, *definitely* banned by Meta)
@anelki @adr @justinling Yes!
@adr you'd think the lag time would give us time to prepare and refuse, but no, just get to live in room for a couple of extra years 😭
Academic publisher with a reputation for exploitation doubles down:
"In its most recent annual report (for 2022), Springer Nature posted an operating profit of €487 million (around £410 million) on revenues of more than €1.8 billion (around £1.6 billion)."

That's a 27% profit margin and then they offer their employees a real-term pay cut. The only thing anybody should be surprised about is that they went for so long before going after their own employees as well.
@MidniteLibrary @adr I love the camp of it SO MUCH, but will be watching FalastinVision instead this year.
Truly love to see a "revitalization" plan for downtown that permanently reserves empty space for seasonal, exclusionary, and just fucking stupid, hockey parties. Really making things vibrant, there, Winnipeg.
Albini, huh.
Al Jazeera is reporting on Rafah, and Hamas accepting ceasefire proposal. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2024/5/6/israels-war-on-gaza-live-israel-pounds-rafah-as-truce-talks-stall
This is a garbage headline that is fractally wrong and also why biden has lost 20% margin in youth vote in a year. The only violence at the #UCLA encampment was committed AGAINST them by the police and the fascist mobs the police gave carte blanche to. The encampment was NOT chaotic - it was highly orderly, well disciplined, and a place of education and solidarity. The encampment is a protest AGAINST violence sanctioned by the Biden administration.
Camp is fucking TOUGH. they are still linked up and resisting with an entire army of cops bearing down on them. Some scattered arrests but like most of the camp is still chanting and fighting. Theres no way for anyone outside to get there or back them up since there are so many cops making multiple layers between us and them.
@kjsanders right back at ha ❤️
