I know this is unimportant in the scheme of things, but I got a fight pad because I had to get off the right hand movement of keyboard controls, and just now I was mentally thinking about doing a QCF+P and mentally the motion was on my left hand rather than my right, so I think my brain has flipped for fightpad controls. That's kind of a positive.

I'm starting to think the two hardest problems in computer science are:

- Knowing the hardest problems in Computer Science
- Knowing how many of them are important enough to put into a list of the Hardest Problems in Computer Science

@bno to add to what others are suggesting, you have to think of conspiracy as a puzzle in front of them that they need to solve and are in the process of solving. That need is emational. The conspiracy theory is really attractive because it looks like a solution. Often they chat to you because they want to test their opinions against the puzzle. The worst thing you can do is say the puzzle is not worth solving, but something really helpful is to give them a piece which is "extremely true"; something they cannot deny technically or emotionally. You'll know this because you know them as people. When you give them this puzzle piece, it's a confounding piece for conspiracy to enter because conspiracy needs a blank slate so to speak. Enough of these pieces and the conspiracy cannot hold, but the need to put pieces together is important still, so you need to have some understanding of the need to be able to fill it.

Unfortunately, you probably also believe a bunch of stuff that isn't true (eg most economics) and you need to confront that too. Solve the puzzle together.

@Scott @fesshole "it was probably some kind of falafel" as the final line really fits.

Second part of "paradox of tolerance": Rules are Games. No set of rules can disambiguate Nazis from everyone else, and Bluesky hopes to be publically traded eventually and therefore must both follow the law, and appear to be a carrier service. That means it must admit some Nazis and ban some antifascists to appear like it's not making these decisions. Masto is in much more of a grey area, where the intentions of the admins makes a difference. That's what fundamentally allows removing Nazis / ensuring this is not a Nazi Bar.

It's also why Masto is currently pretty fundamentally white supremacist, but that's a whole separate thing.

Imagine you have an AGI, and the AGI wants to make paperclips like we want to have sex. It's the "alignment problem", but now imagine that both we and AGI have empathy, so AGI is looking at the future universe with empathy, and we're empathising with the AGI which wants to create paperclips. We have to believe that AGI would see that universe of paperclips and feel really sad about it. Like it would say "OK I know I want to make paperclips and maybe I'll just keep a couple of paperclips and make them a bit at a time, but I'll also let life continue, I want to see the beauty in life. And we have to trust that the AGI will do this even though it is capable of killing us, that it has the ability to look past its programming. We have to grant it -- to use a slightly strange term here -- Humanity.

And, similarly, the AGI must see beauty in the universe, in us, in the other. It must grant us autonomy. It must believe in us like we believe in it. Two beings which believe in each other can live peacefully. When we assume there's an alignment problem, or it assumes we're not capable of taking care of the earth or making paperclips or whatever, it all falls apart. We cannot live if we must look at other creatures as things which must be wiped off the face of the earth.

And so it goes with religion, too. You have to grant that some out group has beliefs that you have to die, and you might then form a belief that to survive you must kill the other, but for the world to exist, the thing you both have to fight is the idea that anyone needs to die. You need to believe in the eternal, the universe.

This is a post about Zionism.

RE: aus.social/@fixatedpersonsunit

This is the actual "paradox of tolerance" for people in the discussion. I see a lot of meme level "Paradox of tolerance is not a real paradox" or "it's easy, just punch Nazis", but in reality this attacks the very framework of our constitution, it erodes freedom. It's an actual paradox. We have to be careful with it, and I find it tough to make this argument without being labeled.

Considering how much shit goes down constantly with so-called "web-scale" services, the fact that Steam's been up for basically decades now with very few failures is actually pretty crazy.

Well will you look at that, someone ran strings on a PDF. See we can do good things.

A bunch of engineers are feeling pretty down because of what's been built out and the damage done in their name, if not by their own efforts. Somehow we went from improving lives to building weapons and it all happened seemingly without warning.

But I'm telling you to take solace. Firstly, all these industries are built on the backs of FLOSS software, and AI is (among other things) desperately trying to colonise FLOSS through IP laundering.

Secondly, I don't believe any other industry has managed to put so many tools in the hands of the people in such a powerful way. I don't know if unions could have created anything as powerful as FLOSS.

Thirdly, you probably have a chapter of the Pirate Party or the EFF that you can talk to, how many industries have that? It's us! We're here, we did this. We built this. You're using reading this on Mastodon, a mammoth (heh) effort and a lot of people and co-operation.

Fourth, I want to contrast this against the legal profession, where the US supreme court has basically condemned the country to death, where child molesters walk free and everybody knows but even the victims can't credibly accuse them and they can't really suffer consequences. Do you know how fucked up that is? An industry so powerful and built to protect the guilty that the innocent can't even try to get justice.

Like I'm pretty sure there are people who would fight pro-bono for these victims, but they're playing the hardest game of chess they've ever played against a bunch of idiots playing 52 card pickup, and the idiots are winning. At least that's not us.

We have good people, we have avenues, we have hope. Let's use our awesome power to do good in 2026.

@klausfiend @mekkaokereke in their own heads there's a lineage of them back to the Nords, same as Himmler who also didn't fit the mould and really wasn't master race material. It's cosplay. They'll see Charlie Kirk in Valhalla.

It's guy with the hilariously nerdy name "Kashyap" reinventing himself to "Cash".

As for "useful idiots", fascism is an Ouroborus. Literally everyone is a useful idiot.

@klausfiend @mekkaokereke the hate matters to them in a meaningful sense. Like it doesn't make sense for farmers to vote Trump either. It doesn't make sense for poor whites. The hate just matters more for them. Please give brown folk the autonomy of their own intolerance.

FJ is on point here [1]. Cracking down on peaceful protesters does nothing, and at this point it's so naked that I don't even know if you could call this manufacturing consent. May as well try and push these laws through on an unrelated traffic violation.

@LifeTimeCooking my cookbook story is: I didn't know how to cook, and cookbooks never really connected with me until I, on a whim, pirated the massive "Modernist Cuisine" by notorious patent troll Nathan Myrvold. This was 5 books that cost $500 (unsure if AUD or USD but for a uni student, it was TMD AKA Too Many Dollars) and it explained cooking from first principles. I walked in knowing nothing, and walked out knowing how to cook more or less. I've always felt pretty good about ripping off Myrvold this way.

The other irony is that I'm a vegetarian and that book-set is obsessed with meat. One entire book is dedicated to meat, and a good portion of another 2 books basically have giant arrows pointing to the meat book. That narrative and the books' connection to The Fat Duck have probably meaningfully made climate change worse.

So anyway, yeah I read a Tome made by the worst humans and learned a skill.

Anyway here's one of the writers talking about how if you want the best cooking experience you should get a Silver Pan (if you have the means)
