I went pretty long in this blog post about my ideas about how AI can help mitigate many of the challenges people have faced when adopting Hanami. I also think Hanami's code style of functional, immutable code with explicit boundaries could be better suited than Rails' massive kitchen sink API's.

Please let me know what you think, I'd love to hear your thoughts hanamirb.org/blog/2025/06/26/m

In the last five years, we've gone from "employees will never have to go into an office" to "employees need to be in the office because creative and innovative work can only be done face-to-face between humans" to "lol we don't need humans"

“Why Blender 4.4 Video Editor is Revolutionary” youtu.be/9tWEsqIgeDY — LOL at the title, and the video gets some facts wrong, but overall good feedback. #blender #vse :blender:

Just pushed the 3.0 version of the Ruby jwt gem to the world.

Biggest update in a while, with a bunch of removed/extracted functionality.

I came across a Gitlab ticket about an application in the Gnome ecosystem.

The tone leaves me cold. It gives off an uneasy feeling, mixing passive-aggressive behavior with pointed innuendos.

In short: a message coming from a toxic person.

Skills shouldn't be a free pass for this kind of person. The Gnome project absolutely doesn't need this, and it's what's been damaging their image for years.

I hope things improve, for the ❤️ of Gnome project.

I wrote a post to braindump what I'm currently working on: allowing lock-free access to class instance variables from Ractors.

As part of my job, I have to evaluate AI tools. Part of that evaluation is pushing them to their limit. Today, I realised Cursor has a setting where if you critique its work enough, it goes silent and refuses to apply changes.

It's a moody junior dev whose overconfidence and bravado quickly turn to surly silence when their work is questioned. The happy, helpful (and frequently wrong) AI is gone, replaced by a useless one with a bad attitude that won't make it past the next performance review.

Christ. I'm used to managing engineers, but I draw the line at managing AIs.

Announcing: justaqrcode.com.

Tired of "free" QR code generators that are full of ads and trackers, that share your data, and that want to sell you something? Me too. Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.

My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

Friendly reminder

An image shows three battery icons representing different energy levels. The first battery is mostly full and colored teal. The second battery is about half-full and colored yellow, with the caption above it: "take a break at this point" and an arrow pointing down. The third battery is nearly empty and colored red, with the caption below it: "not this" and an arrow pointing up. The image emphasizes the importance of resting before complete exhaustion. At the bottom, the image is credited to "healthline."

I gave a fireside chat a little over a week ago at c-base. A lot of people have told me they really connected with it c-tube.c-base.org/w/2vHZ69an4R

I'm glad. We talked briefly about what the questions would be right beforehand, but this wasn't pre-scripted. These are just the things I think.

Firefox 128 ESR. The last, best, final version of Firefox. Let's just fork Firefox at 128 and never upgrade, no spyware, no fucked up IP-assignment EULA, no AI, no slithering snakepit tab bar. No more features. Features are over. The software industry can no longer be trusted with features
