@skalyan @letterror @TiroTypeworks Re your comment in parentheses: they roughly do. They would be in the same ballpark. Not, eg. twice each other.

@letterror @skalyan @TiroTypeworks Absolutely not. I was just talking to the economics of why mobile phones have higher density pixels.

That said, opsz should in an ideal world, depend on the angular size of the text, not the physical size. I believe we are in agreement there.

@skalyan @TiroTypeworks @letterror IMO it's more like this:

- More pixels enables reading smaller font sizes,

- Mobile and then laptop devices are used closer to the eyes than big monitors, so it is desirable to have smaller pixels on them to achieve the same perceived font size,

- But also, screen real estate is more important on smaller screens,

- Finally, high-res display panels are expensive. So, more feasible in small form factors.

@TiroTypeworks @letterror Ack. CSS pixel is 96 dpi...

Latest creation.

@omikhleia It has been done for sure. We don't currently have a ready-made tool for it. You would need to cut a subset retaining the gid's you want, then modify the cmap to add extra PUA mappings to it. If speed is not an issue, you can do this on top of `fonttools subset` via Python API easily.

#HarfBuzz 11.0.1 is out with a few but important bug fixes. Please update.

I've been doing some very basic leatherwork. Feels amazing to use my hands to create something other than code.

@niklasnisbeth Looks like you don't have shaping at all, which is why glyph shapes are associated to Unicode characters. You need to transplant HarfBuzz in the middle, to get glyph indices from Unicode text, then you can cache bitmaps for those glyphs keyed by the glyph index. You can continue using FreeType for that.

"2025Q1 Fonts Quarterly" is out: what I worked on in font technology (mostly #HarfBuzz) land this past quarter:

@n8 @justvanrossum I liked my old laptop sticker from one of the foundries reading "We build fonts".

@rosetta To me FontTools is a font engineer's toolbox. That's why I became obsessed with this design. I'm in the minority though clearly.

2025-04-01

@justvanrossum :)) all good. I'll stick to what I'm good at. :D

@justvanrossum Thanks Just. I'm sorry for bringing this up again. Fortunately, the poll is speaking for itself.
