@mlanger @maximum_mew Eleanor Roosevelt was super-cool though!

@mlanger @maximum_mew Eleanor Roosevelt was super-cool though!
@mlanger @maximum_mew True, but literally rounding people up into camps feels inexcusable.
@maximum_mew @mlanger Unfortunately FDR was an antisemite who also rounded up Japanese-Americans in internment camps. He also did some very good things, but his record is not spotless on the compassion front.
This is an important way to support different kinds of communities. It's great to see the Mastodon team grow to support these features. I'd love to see CC-licensed terms of service for communities to use. #Fediverse https://werd.io/2025/mastodon-updating-some-legal-features
@artlung Confession: I've still never seen it. I should correct this.
@artlung It's, uh, not the only criteria I use for making friends. Otherwise I would have no friends. ;)
I wrote a text adventure once where there was a pirate Time Lord in a bar wearing a badge that read Ask Me About Looms, and if that means anything at all to you then we should be friends.
Interesting to think about, as a thought experiment which I concede is not very realistic, what the world would look like if people with empathy and compassion were in charge.
@_elena Careless People was a surprisingly fun read for something so real-life dystopian!
@Ashedryden Thank you! I haven't read any of these. I'll check them out.
@jeffrey I've read that! It's so great!
I just finished The Memory Police, which I loved. Working my way through Alex Hanna and Emily M. Bender's timely non-fiction book The AI Con now. I'm looking for a fiction book to follow it up with - what are you enjoying? What have you enjoyed recently?
@eskibrew Half an A4 sheet. (So, uh, an A5 sheet, but we don’t use that system in the US.)
I’ve used this half sheet prototyping technique for years and love it. Learn about it from the person who taught it to me: https://pointc.co/the-half-sheet/
The thing that makes public transit in cities like NYC work is that you don’t need to know the schedule; you just show up and you know something will come along shortly. When I lived in Oxford the buses to London ran every 5 minutes.
Anyway, I have to wait 45 minutes for my SEPTA train.
@jdp23 That's an interesting point, and something that I wish could be studied - it'd be good to know if it's effective. But either way, having a diverse, inclusive team with an inclusive team culture and distributed decision-making power is paramount.

If you want to see their live reveal and demo, join us June 5-7, online. Registration is open: https://fediforum.org
@neilk They have a studious everyone-comes-in-the-same-door policy, which ensures that people with fewer network connections, eg from traditionally underrepresented communities, are not disadvantaged.
Numerous people have also asked how they can support our mission, so we're launching a Patreon!
If you sign up for the Sponsors tier or higher, you'll receive a coupon code for our People, Not Platforms merch launch next week!
Thank you for your continued support!
