Text: They spend the rest of the night in silence, just watching the rusalki and the trees in their frantic dance, listening to their laughter shaking the ground and making the lake ripple. The silence feels like a drink of the freshest dew, like the pink mist caressing Izzy’s leaves in the early summer morning. It’s a silence full of understanding that heals the crack deep within his wood. He hopes that it helps Samuel as well, at least a little.

Her ancillaries are awake of course, but sorrow simmers in them. Unease courses through the Anne’s circuits at that—she can’t feel it in the way that the ancillaries can, but she cannot deny the emotion—they’re her, after all.

He would call Ed a self-sacrificing idiot. Now, Izzy grunts and nods his head, kneeling down stiffly by the edge of the bed. Ed’s eyes flick over his face - he looks so serious and grim, reaching slowly to lift Ed’s hand. He wraps one hand around his wrist, the other supporting his forearm. Izzy brings Ed’s wrist up to his mouth, and pushes his nose against it, breathing in deeply.
