@robert it’s been really fun hanging out with you all for the last couple of years and being kept busy as part of the team.

Three cheers to @robert for hosting us for so long and bringing us all together!

I want my next musical release might be a circuit diagram and some source code.

2020-09-02

@deianeira they are a joy.

To play anyway, usually not so much joy for the people listening to you practice.

@deianeira banjo!

@electret years ago we bought a huge sheet of birch ply and cut a big stack of our own. I miss having a long board!

@deianeira A decent saute pan with lid.

It’s the only pan anybody really needs.

My print copy of the art of UNIX programming has arrived. Time to get stuck in.

@hecanjog i know right, seems so obvious.

How did I not know about tmpfile() in C?

How?

I mean, I never needed it before now but still, it feels like knowledge I should have already had!

BRB refactoring code I just wrote.

“Go back into the office of cafes will shut.”

Here the local cafes and pubs have never been busier at lunch as now with people queuing up to get a takeout sandwich or something.

Most of the commuters in this commuter town are now working from home and pumping their money into small local businesses because their lives aren’t centralised in the city.

This small town was starting to die. It feels alive again because the city is dying.

@flip “Rincewind is also renowned for being able to solve minor problems by turning them into major disasters.”

I feel like whatever wizard I am, it is whatever Rincewind is.

@mood oh yes. There is far more focus on building a personal brand that you can somehow monetise or use for clout now than there used to be. Most people just ran pages for kicks.

@LilFluff indeed. And yet here we are.

@sir @xerz if creating the best experience for all users is just recreating all the terrible things that made them want to move then what is the point?

2020-08-31

@electret I have this horrible feeling that the only way to fix this is not just making it easier but to fundamentally change the way people interact with the web and what content actually is.

2020-08-31

@electret you also need to make it worthwhile for people to bother. People want constant feedback and interaction with their content. Moving out of then social media bubble makes it hard for that to happen and reduces then perceived reward for taking part.

I too have built my own website generator to create tiny websites. I also dreamed up a tiny blog idea that tuns only in the terminal. For a moment I don’t even pretend that these are ever going to draw people in.

Websites of yore are not compatible with this.

Who now wants to create content only to never really know if anyone has read it, let alone “liked” it. And this is a bigger problem.

People are used to constantly getting feedback now. Attention spans are smaller too.

If you read this far have an award.

And in the words of Columbo, Just one more thing.

Social media has changed the way we interact with content we create.

The web used to be a slower place where content would go live on your page and would be good just by virtue of existing. The joy was in just doing. Feedback was rare if at all.

Now people want instant gratification on things. If you maya blog post, why isn’t it getting likes, is it being shared, how may people have “joined the conversation”.

2020-08-31

@pelagikat maybe web 3.0 will fix it.

Maybe.

It won’t.

But it could.
