i believe these are the 2 oldest surviving online reviews of #gratefuldead shows, scene reports from the warfield theater, september 1980, by stanford AI researchers paul martin & dave wilkins, pictured here on spring tour '74, a year after the launch of the dead.dis email list. preserved on this SAIL backup: https://www.saildart.org/ #deadfreaksunite
@Tusky is there a place to get tech support for the tusky app anywhere? would love to use it on android but won't let me login despite having correct password & cookies turned on (as instructed).
@theheatwarps the former! hope to migrate yonder soon.
The sounds of a dying Twitter. The streaming API still works and I’m sonifying tweets using the #MakeNoise 0-coast and Strega. Tweet lengths determine pitch (longer text = lower note) and other parameters are mapped to velocity/duration. Sounds best with headphones! #MastoMusic #modularsynths #RIPTwitter
is there a way to block surveys out of my feed entirely? never doable on the other site, but trying to find peace in the valley & this particular valley seems more flexible.
@quadbasspickup @ll_rain @rowjimmy fun! nothing that fits the exact bill of which i'm aware. elkhorn made an album a few years ago with 6 versions of "fish," pretty improv-y. they've never put them all on an official album but yo la tengo has a few songs with enough different arrangements to do so, ala this "big day coming" mix. https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/22594311245/i-can-hardly-wait-yo-la-tengo-best-band-ever
@Neddyo the only photo i was able to take of fennesz was by zooming in on the phone screen of someone taller & a ways in front of me. that show would've been better with beanbags for several reasons!
posted in the sweet spot between the rear surround speakers at public records & watched with my ears (& grooved with the disco ball) for sparkling 12-string by eli winter (with david grubbs on harmonium for the closer) & elemental set by fennesz, loops & oceanic drones & distant gamelan.
Working on a Heads mastodon instance with the Jerrybase crew...should be available this weekend I think
after SUGAR MAGNOLIA, garcia shifts into GOIN’ DOWN THE ROAD FEELING BAD, in unusual spot as a show-closer with no additional weirness afterwards. BID YOU GOODNIGHT instrumental ending is a lovely chill way to close the night. #deadfreaksunite #gd111972 [3/3]
11/19/72 houston: TRUCKIN’ conspicuously absent on both nights in the city too close to new orleans. lesh/godchaux/weir lock into gorgeous patterns under garcia’s BIRD SONG flight. really sweet TOMORROW IS FOREVER. 39-minute DARK STAR > MISSISSIPPI HALF-STEP. sleepy pre-verse jazz, almost gentle bass. after, lesh solo builds to deconstructive PHILO STOMP, moving into brightness. weir briefly plays proto-WEATHER REPORT SUITE PRELUDE, but no one else quite registers. nice landing, too. [2/3]
50 years ago tonight, the #gratefuldead in houston, finishing a weekend. another night originally scheduled with the allman bros. late fall ’72, show #7. soundboard: https://archive.org/details/gd1972-11-19.122784.sbd.miller-gans.flac24 [1/3]
@InstituteJerry let me/us know when full migration is functional & i'd happily hop over.
would still love to find a server that places an emphasis on community memory, which in my mind means both being able to migrate with posts intact & actively trying to make the server's content accessible in longer term & more searchable ways. anything like this happening?
I have often said I will end up as a minor footnote in Grateful Dead history, on the back of my obscure essays and peripheral involvement with “Dead scholarship.” Recently, one of my writer pals with similar obsessions has been the host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast, which has quickly turned into one of the most thorough, accessible, entertaining, and informative documentaries about that zany band ever.
Host Jesse Jarnow has occasionally up to now quoted me as a “friend of the show,” mainly citing my oft proffered observation that “Dark Star was hiding out in Bird Song during the ’80s.” Smarter musicologists tell me how this is technically not true but I’d say listen to some of those deep modal jams and get back to me.
This week, Jesse graciously had me on the podcast! as a guest to discuss Dead-related internet lore and Usenet memes. It was a blast and a real honor. Footnote status practically guaranteed now!
They tout the shows as “for the committed and the curious,” so give it a listen:

most days i wish posts were still limited to 140 characters. more micro, less blogging.
another green jersey! #thefeelies as the willies as themselves at white eagle hall in jersey city. vibed originals & covers they haven't played since the mid-'80s. "the obedient atom"! "here come the warm jets"! also, apparently they can jam? total bliss, minus 20 minute fire alarm evacuation. and then an old fashioned feelies stomp, even more ecstatic & full-feeling after an atmospheric willies set, complete with the return of "crazy rhythms" era bassist keith denunzio for "forces at work."
