If you want traffic to suck less, check out this video. I learn a few new terms, like red light platooning. #BikeLanes #sfbike
@hzeller @strangeparts But with Java?
@strangeparts 🤔 If I could do this I would not build just a phone, but make something all new. It is hard to think of what that would be.
What I miss from my high school days is my Boom Box. The modern Bluetooth speakers lack all of the satisfying buttons and knobs. I’d like to create a modern Boom Box that brings back all the satisfying tactile controls. Instead or tape cassettes or CDs it would work with whatever streaming service you use and keep offline playlists. And it would be able to play in sync with other speakers in a party mode.

As journalists find their audience elsewhere it will accelerate the decline of X.
Meanwhile on X:

Journalists and news orgs appear to be getting more traffic on Bluesky. This is going to attract more people to the platform. It never really took off on Mastodon.
@graue I don’t think Bluesky is competing with Mastodon. After dropping from a high of just 2M users down to under 1M it is clear Mastodon has more pressing concerns. There is no scoreboard. There are MAUs. And lately Bluesky has been adding 1M users daily for over 2 weeks. Last I saw it was over 23M. Even Meta is concerned. And a lot of people are trying it and enjoying it. Why rain on their parade?
This video narrated by Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe is why we’re selling our Tesla and buying a Rivian.
Elon wants to destroy people. RJ wants to lift them up.
BTW. Rivian is also a better car.
@rrmutt I have made a little progress making it work. I the board I used initially was not seated properly so it was always blank. It shows ABrobot by default. I don’t have tech specs and the sell did not have the right details when we had a chat last night. Next I will look for this OLED part by itself. Then I may get what I need.
Also ordered 5 more since they are on sale.
@scott I also don’t have my Mastodon data on my own computer. If the server suddenly shuts down that would be unfortunate. I’d like a way to get data to sync to my computer so I can redeploy my account if that becomes necessary. Personally, I’d like to manage photo albums which I can share on Mastodon and include selections in posts. Then I would have my content organized and under my control. I’d set some albums to be public or only accessible by mutual followers. Bluesky should do this as well.
Another feature I want is events with RSVP features. That would be a great way to enhance community online and in person. I could see street fairs and farmer’s markets being listed and users could look at what’s coming up nearby.
@scott I believe we’re in a transition period. Many have left Meta and X platforms and are experimenting with other options. It seems Bluesky has some significant traction right now. Perhaps Mastodon and other ActivityPub could absorb some of these ideas. Discovering and choosing services that provide custom feeds, moderation and starter kits would be welcome, I’m sure.
@scott There are a couple of other features I appreciate about Bluesky.
Custom Feeds - You can pick the algorithm which populates your feed. You can even make your own algorithm.

https://docs.bsky.app/docs/tutorials/custom-feeds
Stackable Moderation - You can select a moderation provider instead of just getting the one bad service the platform fails to provide.

These options allow me to improve my experience on the platform and even offer these services to others. These are also examples of decentralization that other platforms do not have.
@StumpyTheMutt I’d like to get a copy of this data.
@ruicarneiro The breach could have an impact on these people for decades. There should an alert system to warn you if any of these guys live near you.
@scott From what I’ve been reading Bluesky has made progress to improve support for decentralizing service providers. I can run my account under my own domain names and run my own PDS which is a great start.
https://github.com/bluesky-social/pds
Bluesky is still working to improve decentralization support. New services can also leverage federated accounts using ATProto, like WhiteWind is for blogging.
AtProto sounds like Google Wave which was also a federated system but was not given long enough time to take root. It was later repurposed for Google+ and finally left behind as infra to simply unify Google web apps like YouTube with the rest of Google.
But I’m not as concerned about the technical details as I am about the “digital town square” which Twitter represented years ago. We lost that. Mastodon has not really recreated it. Too many voices are not present in this space. Meanwhile I am seeing communities forming quickly on Bluesky.
Starter packs on Bluesky are such a great idea. It makes it easy to find and follow a collection of accounts related to an interest. I’m also learning Bluesky also has decentralized features and accounts which can be set up with your own domain names, instead of being tied to a single one owned by a company which could be sold to a undesirable new owner. The platform now has over 20 million users and is growing rapidly. For comparison, Mastodon is now under 1 million from a high around 2 million. It’s important to also know Jack Dorsey is no longer involved in Bluesky.
@rrmutt The Black Friday deals ate looking good. Most stuff is half off.
