@andybaio Lastly:

– A Room of One’s Own, in Schenk-Atwood NE of the capitol, is my favorite indie bookshop; I also like The Book Deal, in a converted ranch-style house
– My family has also enjoyed visits to Cave of the Mounds, about half an hour west of town

@andybaio – I second Olbrich Botanical Gardens for nature; Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a nice, flat trail that runs along the water’s edge north of campus
– Another nice neighborhood walk is along Monroe St., in the few blocks either side of Trader Joe’s; Bloom Bake Shop has good pastries; Barrique’s is local favorite indie coffee chain; a few blocks southwest Colectivo Coffee has a lovely atmosphere
– The Henry Vilas Zoo is free, near Monroe St., and great for kids

@andybaio Finally I can put my parents’ move there a decade ago to good use:

– I second Chocolate Shoppe and Babcock Dairy Store in Memorial Union for ice cream
– I also second the Geology museum on campus; ditto the Chazen Museum of Art, a solid mid-size university gallery
– The square around the Capitol has a great farmer’s market (on Saturdays, I believe)

Screenshot of a macOS "drag app to applications folder" installer but there are three applications folders that are titled "Drag here?" "or maybe drop here?" and "don't get it wrong!" The app is called "Tangerine" and the icon is an orange.

@rachsmith A couple years ago they landed on redesigns that kinda converged, but I dig the vibe that both Princeton and Harvard’s university presses give off:

@nickheer Is Subtext good? I’m not a coffee drinker, but my wife is, and they’re like 3 blocks away from me here in Toronto …

Anya Kielar, “Artist,” 2023. Foam, fabric, aqua resin, paint, Plexiglass. 34 × 26 × 7 ½ in. Exhibited that year at Document, Chicago: documentspace.com/exhibition/a

A shallow box lined with a beige and pink–patterned fabric or paper reveals the outline of a woman’s profile; her elongated neck, oval eyes, and hair slyly reference Classical Greek and/or Egyptian art

“There’s a new #documentary celebrating the history and impact of #libraries heading to PBS, and the trailer released today touches on the unequivocal positive impact they—and the #librarians who work there—have on communities.”

@onpaperwings @jasonsantamaria keep fighting the good fight! And Jason, though I’m only a permalancer I made sure your smart quotes site got added to Notion’s internal style guide. Together we shall overcome. 🧐🧐🤓🤓

@alexobenauer Happy to share recommendations! Two other places to look for interesting layout ideas, if not always unique physical constructions, are the annual awards ceremonies for best book designs in two countries filled with great designers:

Enjoy!

@nazhamid I see everyone recommending Fastmail. I haven’t used it, but I’ve seen similar questions on Mastodon recently and several respondents brought up the fact that Fastmail seemingly union-busted some time last year (e.g., union.place/@fastmailunited/11). Don’t know if that factors into things, but thought I’d share for additional context.

@kupfers Just popping in to say how much I love Lorien and even though I'm not a designer I'm trying to figure out how to use it soon.

@commercial @litherland I greatly admire that you're folding proper editorial efforts into your marketing. And great to get Chris to design it—he did great work at Project Projects and now with Wkshps.

@overholt It’s a useful description for a lot of people’s contributions to text-based social media!

~115 issues after launching the new edition of Frontier Magazine, I’m ending my run. I’ll be focusing on Valise, which I cofounded, and on other editing, writing, and editorial-strategy projects. The last newsletter just went out: magazine.frontier.is/doing-goo

As I approach, I’ve taken to calling out to people standing/lingering in the bike lane: “Let me enjoy this lane until Ford takes it from us!”
