@dancinyogi Retail workers get a lot of abuse. I've done retail. Some customers love making up stories to try to get retail workers fired. I was witness to a lot of that.

Most retail workers do not want to work retail at the best of times. Christmas is one of the worst of times. Christmas is misery for retail workers - they're rushed off their feet, have to deal with insane traffic to get to a job that makes them miserable. Nobody wants to work retail. It is the lowest bar above unemployment.

Happy Christmas everybody

@Raccoon If I am correct, Mark Zuckerburg is Jewish.

2023-12-24

@FeralRobots @engarneering @thomasfuchs On an individual level, it does.

I'm working on the countertop in my DIY motorhome. This is the working countertop hence the industrial look. Those ribs are separators. There will be more separators but making the small separators is proving challenging right now. I'll conquer them though.

The reason for the separators - this countertop is dedicated to making electronics and programming microcontrollers. Thus one side (not shown) will hold trays of electronics. This side has a steel top - for soldering on and separators for tools etc.

@Paul That looks tasty.

@ianbetteridge When I lived in the UK, they wrote, summoning me to jury service then wrote two days before I was due to attend, telling me I was not required. Very disappointing.

@jakob_thoboell @nixCraft I tend to agree. I dislike this cloud-based data approach where who knows which company has your files. I equally dislike all computers (including Linux) having to dial home all the time for updates etc.

I'm a pretty big Linux user but mostly by happenstance whic is helpful since I'm now into Arduino, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi.

2023-12-23

@jakob_thoboell @nixCraft No need to insult Windows or Windows users. The users are just using what comes on their computers and Windows is an attempt at an OS with the current redesign dating back to XP being far better than the woeful thing they came up with that was Windows 95. 3.1 was a ride, riding on top of DOS. DOS was pretty good.

I use Linux because Windows is just too bloated with too many extra features that I don't want. I have used Mac OSX and loved it - until my Macbook died. I would have continued on with my Macbook as I really liked the feel of the OS. I just didn't have the extra cash to buy a new macbook at the time. Now I do, I'm sticking with Linux.

I'm in the midst of building a microcontroller lab. It's fun but time consuming. Right now I'm working on a workbench. This will have open compartments on the top and a steel area for soldering - so that a hot soldering iron won't set anything ablaze if it's dropped.

@taylorlorenz Think about who Mark Zuckerburg is... He will support Israel. He is bound to support Israel.

2023-12-22

@nixCraft My last two laptops came with a Windows installer on them. That was never activated. I just formatted the SDD as soon as I bought them and installed Linux.

The last Windows I owned and used was XP.

@Raccoon @nicdex @Paul

The problem is toxic ideas need to be weeded out by helping those advocating them to see that they are toxic. You can grab a flat-earther by the scruff of the neck and yell at him "the world is a sphere" and that won't help. They have to discover the truth for themselves. We have to be able to help them to find that truth.

My fear about them being run off the standard websites is that they have no ordinary people to dilute their toxicity on the extremist sites they go to. Once they find they are only welcome on extremist sites, they are surrounded by like-minded people competing against each other to be the most extreme. My fear is that by protecting the guillable from extremist ideas that the extremists become more extreme by us not allowing them to talk to normal people.

Jordan Peterson is very opinionated. I have watched some of his videos and I can't say I like what he says. It's very cut and dried for him with no grey areas.

Traditionally feminine role... Hmm... I'd go for buying her a cheap Olive Garden brunch and have her clean my house in return.

2023-12-22

@MattHodges A small step forward.

I'd like to see them legalise and tax all the drugs - get the criminality out of it.

2023-12-22

@nicdex @Raccoon @Paul I agree - way too many people go in for name calling when they run out of convincing arguments.

As far as platforms are concerned, we are at a very interesting period. Currently all the platforms are operated or sponsored by different businesses or individuals. This leads to an interesting question on impartiality.

I can walk down the street with a sandwich board, yelling "the world will end in 20 days. Repent while you can" and that is clearly protected freedom of speech under the constitution.

I can set up a radio station and broadcast communist party propaganda 24x7 and that is protected.

Where the problem lies is where the distinction is less clear. Social media has become important in many people's lives so perhaps it's too important to leave to companies and individuals to own and maintain social media engines. On the other hand government cannot be trusted not to fill a government run thing with propaganda.

2023-12-22

I seem to be fighting a losing battle, supporting the right to free speech.

Free speech just means nobody gets gagged or silenced. It does not mean they don't get mocked, jeered, argued against or ignored.

If free speech is restricted then for a short while things appear more pleasant until speech you didn't want restricted begins to be blocked.

Censorship starts out with good intentions and always ends up with an unmitigated disaster.

Welcome to 1984 where people view censorship as normal.

2023-12-22

@Raccoon @Paul I have no problem with people posting propaganda of any form - Heavens, I see enough from various little groups that I don't want to hear from. I'm an adult though and I have the capability of ignoring their nonsense.

It is much more concerning when somebody else takes it upon themselves to filter and block what I might otherwise have to ignore. That means somebody is censoring what I receive. Many governments do this routinely to deny their subjetcs knowledge, power and freedom.

We don't want an internet based on the North Korea, Russian or Chinese models nor even the sphincter-clenching version the UK is slowly producing.

What is the first Amendment to the US constitution? The right to free speech? That does not imply everybody must listen.

@pixplz @draNgNon @engarneering @thomasfuchs

It's impossible to both deport somebody and put them in a concentration camp.

You can do one or the other, not both.
