@mariatta Believe it or not, Iโ€™ve encountered this before. ๐Ÿ˜„ It was in the context of activism, using faxes to send letters to government offices. There are online services out there, but itโ€™s probably a lot safer (and not that complex) to build your own.

Will there possibly be a translation, or a transcript that I can get translated? :/ I am unfortunately not a French speaker but Iโ€™d love to get into the content of this talk.

I feel the same about restaurant web sites - no one should have to search for your address and hours (or a link to the menu).

DjangoCon Africa 2025 Heads to Arusha ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ

Weโ€™re excited to share that DjangoCon Africa is returning this year โ€” and this time weโ€™re heading to Arusha, Tanzania from August 11โ€“15, 2025! ๐ŸŽ‰

This second edition builds on the incredible success of the inaugural DjangoCon Africa held in Zanzibar in 2023. That event welcomed over 200 attendees from 22+ countries, with more than half of the participants being women โ€” a powerful statement about the growing diversity and strength of the African tech ecosystem.

What to expect at DjangoCon Africa 2025

Five action-packed days of:

  1. ๐Ÿ’ฌ Talks Three full days of diverse talks spanning programming, technology, society, career development, business, education, and more โ€” all with voices from across Africa and around the globe.
  2. ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Workshops Hands-on training led by Django and Python experts โ€” perfect for deepening your skills and learning new ones.
  3. ๐Ÿค Sprints Join code sprints and contribute to open source projects, including Django itself.
  4. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป Django Girls workshop A special pre-conference workshop for women interested in web development โ€” part of a global initiative that has introduced thousands of women to Django.
  5. ๐Ÿ” Discovery & connections Meet developers, designers, educators, and innovators from across the continent. Share stories. Build partnerships. Celebrate African tech talent.

Co-hosting with UbuCon Africa 2025

This yearโ€™s DjangoCon Africa comes with a special twist: weโ€™re proud to co-host the first-ever UbuCon Africa โ€” a regional gathering of Ubuntu users and contributors.

From August 13โ€“15, UbuCon Africa will bring together Linux and open source enthusiasts to celebrate people-powered tech, collaboration, and the Ubuntu spirit of โ€œI am because we are.โ€ Whether you're a die-hard Debian dev or just curious about Ubuntu โ€” youโ€™ll feel right at home.

๐ŸŽŸ Secure your spot & get involved

Whether youโ€™re looking to attend, speak, sponsor, or volunteer, DjangoCon Africa has a place for you.

This is more than just a conference. Itโ€™s a celebration of community, learning, and open source  built by and for people across Africa and beyond.

Join us in Arusha this August. Letโ€™s shape the future of Django together.

I have watched my life burn to the ground and started again from scratch many, many times.

I believe in second acts and second chances.

I want to say this clearly for anyone who needs to hear it: it is possible to survive radical, unexpected and unwanted life changes, to start again, and to build a new life that is worth living.

The coworking space Iโ€™m in today is a little on the witchy side. ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฎ #asabovesobelow

(We have roofers making a bunch of noise at the house for a week - luckily we found a dog-friendly work space in Old Town Pasadena, CTRL Collective.)

Over 70% of the wealth in Silicon Valley is held by just 9 households.

Happy birthday @django ! I don't work with Django as often as I used to, but I wouldn't be where I am without the community and all the friends I've made there over the years. Cheers (and hugs) to all of you!

@glyph

Only tangentially related to all of this - I grew up on Christopher Reeve as my Superman. I watched the โ€œSuper/Manโ€ bio on a flight a few weeks ago and it reminded me what a good human he was - he might be the reason the Man of Steel is my favorite superhero to this day.

I've just finished reading _Technofeudalism_ by Yanis Varoufakis. If he's right, then it's politically urgent to escape from the clutches of Meta, Google, Amazon and the like as soon as possible.

Varoufakis' arguments reminded me of _Chokepoint Capitalism_ by Rebecca Giblin and @pluralistic, though according to Varoufakis the dominance of Amazon and the like has killed off capitalism and is a form of feudalism. I still want to compare these two analyses more carefully.

But Varoufakis' argument is: these platforms have managed to lure people in to work for them for free, and with every post and update on their platforms, these exploitative and massively dangerous companies grow stronger and harder to defeat. On the other hand, if the people take back social media and the internet more generally, there's a real opportunity for building a counter-movement with these technologies.

The lesson I take from this: getting people to quit the capitalist platforms and join the #Fediverse is part of political organisation, and possibly an important part if you consider the way people are tethered to their Instagram and Tiktok.

Let me repeat this: Convincing and helping comrades to quit the capitalist platforms and join the Fediverse is an important form of revolutionary political organisation. โœŠ
