It caught my eye today.

While it resembles the ladybug, the Multicolored Asian Ladybeetle is a pest. It orange, not red, and is almost as cute as its beneficial cousin.

A small beetle. The wing covers are orange with black spots, the face it black on top with white sides. Mouthparts that look like tiny bristles are visible, as are multi-part black eyes and feet.

It caught my eye today.

American ermine moth. I helped this pretty little thing escape from the birdbath. Once it was dry it did not stick around long.

White moth with small black spots on a small stick.

It caught my eye today.

I was about 4 feet away when I took this photo of a totally unafraid very young house sparrow. I enjoyed the good look but wonder how this little one will survive without a bit more fear. (Note that you can see a bit of the yellow mouth indicating that this is a very young bird.)

An image of a small bird perched on the edge of a plant pot with basil growing in the background. The bird has a light brown breast, medium and dark brown wings, and a brown tail. The bright yellow edges of the mouth are barely visible, indicating that this is a very young bird.

It caught my eye today. Dillweed in a gentle rain.

Green plant with one thin central stem and very thin branching leaves. Raindrops on many of the leaves. A mottled green background.

This goldfinch was getting a last snack of seeds from last year's basil. Today I pulled all the dried plants and started preparing for this year's plants.

(The yellow in the background is a euphorbia.)

A yellow bird with black marking on the the wings, clinging to long thin stems with whirls of dried seedheads evenly spaced along the stem. In the background, indistinct yellow-green plants.

Visit from a rarely-seen neighbor this morning. We know there are groundchucks in the woods across the road but haven't seen one for years.

Groundhog standing in front of a car, behind flowers and grass spikes. The head is up, the front paws show, you can see the sharp claws.

Dandelion! Many things we call weeds are pretty. And are not weeds in all environments. (My farmshare frequently includes dandelion greens this time of year.)

Closeup of a bright yellow flower on a black background. The dandelion flower has many narrow petals with a double notch at the end.

Early this morning a shake-the-house thunder storm came through. When I got up there was one pink magnolia petal on the table on the porch. The closest pink magnolia tree is several blocks away.

Pink flower petal, darker at one end than the other, slightly damaged, on a wrought iron table top.

At the entrances to Suburban Hospital (in a Maryland suburb of Washington, DC) are there are mask dispensers and signs advising people with symptoms of measles to put on masks. We seem to be rolling the clock back to the 1950s - which were only a good time in situation comedies.

Sign text: "Help us prevent the spread of MEASLES. If you have: fever, rash, cough, red eyes, recent contacts with someone diagnosed with measles, recent travel to an area with measles activity, please put on a free mask immediately and check in with a staff member" on a box with masks and tissues.

Spring comes every year. Even this year. Spring is important. Especially this year.
(The first blossoms on this apricot tree have just popped.)

Small branches with pink buds and a few white flowers against a bright blue sky.

Last night the unheated birdbath did not freeze solid so it was easy to lift the ice disk from the surface in the morning. The shapes on the bottom surface of the ice that was floating on top of the water are complex and fascinating.

Maple Tree with Ice. Freezing rain this morning made travel dangerous, and some very pretty ice-covered trees.

The birds are fluffed so much they seem spherical on this cold morning. We are seeing more of them than usual because we have heated (just above freezing) water for them.

On this cold grey morning Amaryllis Saffron (this tiny pale green beauty) is almost glowing.

A green stalk with several pale green flowers emerging from the top. One of the flowers is open, showing pale green petals and light yellow stamen.

The city is gradually replacing our slightly yellowish street lights with ugly orange ones. How ugly are they? I had the blinds in my front room repaired so I can shut the light out of the house.

But ... I have to admit that they penetrate rain and fog very effectively and made the side of a local school quite beautiful.

House Sparrows don't get much attention or respect but they are very pretty
