IT person. Well-padded. Sometimes stupid, sometimes bright. I love #synthesizers. Sometimes I make #music with them, usually without pants. I also putter around with #electronics, #microcontrollers, #IoT, #HomeAutomation / #HomeAssistant, and #RetroComputing...also without pants. I won't post much personal stuff. LGBTQ ally. Say hi!

A little Saturday retro computing 'hack':
Usb floppy drives from places like Amazon, only write HD 1.44MB disks, have you ever wanted to write a DD 720k disk on a modern computer easily, without something like a Greaseweazle?
Get yourself a Dell MPF82E, it has a USB port

Jeepers, I haven't posted anything here since Halloween of 2023!
(oops, sorry)

2024-01-06

@katre This could have happened to me, but didn't. Because I was an IT contractor for that school at the time, and the teachers all knew better :)

Since it's #Halloween, enjoy this old chestnut of mine youtube.com/watch?v=Gdsip96In2
(or don't, I'm not the boss of you!)

@deepthaw I can't help much with your Apple II dilemma, but under MSDOS, you can use mbrutman's IRCjr and connect to the #retrodreams IRC channel on irc.slashnet.org, which is gated to the General channel on that Discord server.

2023-10-18

Do you use Discord and enjoy #retrocomputing and other retro-related topics? If so, let me know and I'll send you an invite to the RTC server, an active, friendly, inclusive spot to chat about this stuff!

Oops.. Apparently I already posted about this thing LOL.
My plan is to see how far I can expand it using the bus connector on the top edge.

This little Micro Master 8085 trainer is a neat toy I picked up at #VCFMW #retrocomputing

@KydiaMusic you know that his supporters certainly are that stupid. "low information voters" = conservative voters

@gruff NEWDOS/80 was my favorite OS back in the day. Mainly because it gave you complete control of so many aspects of the OS. You could mix-and-match drive types and formats. TBH, other DOSses might have been able to do this as well, but I wasn't exposed to them then.

This TRS-80 Model I was an import from Canada. It was a hopeless case, having been stripped of its ROMs and left for dead. Its journey back to the land of the living took well over a month, and I replaced a total of 28 ICs in just the main unit itself. I'll be writing about this fella's revival, and my modifications, in the future, as well. #TRS80 #retrocomputing

I've collected a few things since my posting dried up here: I bought this Osborne 1 at #VCFSW in Dallas, and spent almost a month getting it running again. I'll be doing writeups on its repair when I get time. #retrocomputing

I came back from #VCFMW with a few things beyond a case of COVID: A Kaypro 2X, and a MicroMaster 8000 8085 CPU trainer. #retrocomputing

@SM0RVV Yes, indeed! One of the PK-232 TNCs was my original that I've had since 1986, and the other, an updated model, was from 1991. The radios were Icom IC-4AT and IC-32AT, from circa 1981 and 1988 respectively. The demo was fun, but it needed constant attention, because the units were transmitting using my callsign. I had to disable the radios every time I stepped away.

After this upcoming weekend, I hope to have several months of free time, without any events that I must prepare for. My website and my posts are about 10 months behind!

VCFMW was a blast! Definitely my favorite VCF so far -- I met lots of cool folks, saw lots of cool hardware, and caught lots of cool COVID! Worth it, though. This was my exhibit: A packet radio link between an Altair and an Osborne 1. #retrocomputing

This coming weekend, Sept. 9-10, look for me at Vintage Computer Festival Midwest in Chicago! Come say hello, and check out my amateur packet radio exhibit using old equipment! vcfmw.org/

i've released the design files for this Sperry Panaplex clock. the firmware isn't done, but the hardware basically is. see github.com/schlae/SperryClock

Although a promising improvement over its previous behavior, this is not optimal. As an aside, the Osborne 1 is very floppy and saggy without its exoskeleton. #RetroComputing
