Local ecologies: two hopeful first volumes of a new series for our dearest Jochen Lempert. At 17 × 24, it’s smaller and more intimate than Jochen’s normal books, maybe most similar to his Frogs books. It’s lso more intimate in content: more private, almost conspiratorial, and many more humans.

A huge thanks to Società delle Api and Nero editions, as well as Serum Network for lithography and NPN Drukkers for stellar production.

Two covers of Jochen Lempert: Local ecology, Kastellorizo and Moulin des Ribes, with black and white nature photography and very discreet black typography.Title page of Local ecology: Kastellorizo. Too small and informal publications to have half titles, the title site across from the inside cover, a framed dusty pink like the facades of Kastellorizo houses and soil.Title page of Local ecology: Moulin des ribes, Grasse, obviously green. Garamond Premier with ATF Garamond Micro.

Local Ecology

We just sent two small volumes with new work of our beloved Jochen Lempert to print.

The content of the books is a slight departure from his usual work: more intimate, dreamy, and site-specific, having been entirely made at residencies in Grasse (France) and Kastellorizo (Greece, barely ;-) with Società delle Api.

Just mixed Garamond Premier and ATF Garamond Micro, we’re such daredevils.

(Jochen Lempert: Local Ecology. Two new books, out soon with NERO/Società delle Api)

A snapshot from the printer: close up of the first recto sheet zoomed in to show a title page. “Local Ecology”, “Jochen Lempert” at the top/bottom in 10.75pt ATF Garamond Micro (tr +3). In the centre, “MOULIN DES RIBES” in Adobe Garamond Premier Pro Text (!) at 42pt (tr –20).

It’s all about the rhythm,
It’s all about the blues.

Single fonts for the Diatype cost from 620 DM to 1380 DM (plus tax) in 1968. a VW Beetle was around 4000 DM, as much as a small font family.

I really enjoyed taking this survey:
surveyking.com/survey/ecal-typ

The framing of “deterministic automation” (eg algorithms) vs “non-deterministic automation” (eg. Machine Learning or “AI”) was super helpful. Maybe I’m not looking in the right places but I haven’t seen much nuanced framing like this elsewhere. And it was interesting for me to think through my actual feelings about different forms of automation for specific tasks🤖

(Yes this has 2015 music data in there. Apple in their wisdom has never updated the python tools needed to unpack the “Electronic Partner Feed” huge data dump since like 2014, and even before they just plain wouldn’t run anymore, updating everything was an incredibly convoluted and time consuming burden.)

@MatthijsSluiter good question! This was all made more than a decade ago, we can’t remember!

@MatthijsSluiter finding, rather than searching! That was our goal for Predominant.ly – whose 10th anniversary this month we totally missed.
