just as a reminder, this is the king of the Netherlands, and on King's Day we celebrate his amazing hair.

tho as you can tell from my hat, the only monarchs with a place in my heart are the Kansas City Monarchs... and the KC Royals, and the KC Kings. Even the pro football team is a monarch (tho it's time to change the name, guys).

but it also doesn't include the kind of takeovers that Kelly wasn't interested in - e.g., oil firms' purchases of various subsidiaries, from Exxon's takeover of Graftek (a golf club manufacturer) to Gulf's unsuccessful bid for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus!

note that these are just the takeover bids from the "Records of hostile tender offers collection" that concern oil & gas in some way; this probably represents ~20-25% of the takeovers that Edmund J. Kelly compiled sourcefiles for...

a couple quick revisions - you can add Irwin Jacobs and ARCO to the list of repeat offenders.

anyway, one of the arguments we're exploring in https://managingscarcity.com/ is the degree to which these corporate raids encouraged the companies in this table (and their peers) to get out of alternative energy and focus on oil & gas (& hence incentivized the turn to denialism).

you can also from the vertical columns who the repeat offenders were in the '80s: particularly Mesa Petroleum (T. Boone Pickens), Carl Icahn, and the Belzberg family; and probably to a lesser extent Coastal Corp. & United Technologies...

after that seemingly a hiatus. i'd love to know whether actors at the time thought it was a permanent dialing back or not - but with hindsight we know there would be another wave of giant M&As around the turn of the millennium (not visible in this dataset)...

too early to tell if it's just an artifact of the sources, but it sure looks like raiding was quite rare until after the 1973 oil crisis and then became much more common until the mid-'80s when the price of oil crashed...
