@felwert @NearerAndFarther In fact, I read a post here from a professor a while ago who accepts AI reports, but only if the students include their prompts. He then promptly ignores the report and rates the prompt.

@errant I think it's a joke, and I love it. But not as a reminder.

An incomplete list of things that make computer programmers obsolete:

- COBOL
- SQL
- BASIC
- Smalltalk
- HyperCard
- VisiCalc
- Visual Basic
- Fourth-generation languages
- No-code platforms
- LLMs

@Viss It doesn't sound like a threat to cryptography, and they also don't mention that in the article. 1000x or more faster transistors are huge for traditional computing, but everything you compute still follows the same constraints of computational complexity.
It's not a bad thing: Practical applications are much easier for this tech.

okay NOW you can start worrying about quantum computers messing with cryptography.

also, im ready for the bottom to fall out of all these massive orgs hosting llms, because with this kind of hardware leap forward, you wont need datacenters that boil the oceans to get gpt4.5 levels of performance anymore

New Caledonia has enacted a sweeping 50-year ban on all commercial seabed mining across its entire 1.3 million km² maritime zone. The French Pacific territory, home to nearly one-third of the world's remaining pristine coral reefs, says it is prioritising environmental protection over economic extraction, allowing only non-invasive scientific research. @Axomamma Only a small part of the Kursk region is occupied, not this city (Zheleznogorsk). I agree that there's some exaggeration here regarding Putin, but if you block for that, many news outlets would qualify for a block as well.

Watching Microsoft’s robots telling Microsoft’s other robots that they need to agree to Microsoft CLAs in between Microsoft’s developers begging Microsoft’s robots to actually understand the problems they’re trying to fix in Microsoft's platform code on Microsoft's version-control website is kind of amazing.

This is definitely the future Terry Gilliam promised us.

Programmers are usually fed a steady diet of features and bug fixes. But occasionally they get to work on performance problems. This development methodology is known as intermittent fasting.

@Sknashville @geerlingguy "in general" sounds odd, if followed by a long list of cases where it isn't. Maybe "as a technology"?
