I hadn't read this in a while but was looking up something, and now re-reading the whole book. It's freely available by the author (including an epub version). It does a deep dive into the authoritarian mindset based on prior work over decades, written plainly and terms are defined (it was written by a college professor) and it should be pretty accessible to those who English isn't their native language. From 2006 but holds up very well today. #ebook

THERE ARE TOO MANY BAD THINGS IN MY FEED THESE DAYS SO HERE HAVE A SEA SHEEP

Photo of a leaf sheep, a type of deep sea slug. It's crawling around on some kind of glowing green moss algae stuff. It...it *looks like a sheep*. It has a sort of sheepy face and two little dark stalk thingies that look like sheep ears and pink spots that look like little pink cheeks and two little dots that look like close-set little eyeballs. It has vibrant green frondsy things sticking out from all over it that look like leaves with pink tips. I swear, I'm not making this up and it's not AI-generated. It looks like a Pokemon. It looks like a cartoon. It's absofuckinglutely adorable and it performs photosynthesis. It needs to rule the world.

I went to a talk lately that was mostly about something else, but the speaker came out with:

“If you only remember one thing from this talk, remember this. Everyone in this room who likes helping people, raise your hand.”

Every hand, or nearly every hand, went up.

“If you like asking other people for help, keep your hand up.”

Almost every hand went back down.

“As you can see, people like helping you. When you ask for help, you’re making them feel good, even if you don’t like asking.”

I’ve genuinely forgotten the rest of the presentation but I won’t forget that.

Germany’s chancellor just did what was once unthinkable: openly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza.

His rebuke marks a historic break from decades of silence rooted in Holocaust guilt, and a shift in how Germany balances its past with present-day human rights.

@YakyuNightOwl (raises hand) I did that in marching band for 1984 Hollywood Christmas Parade of Stars as center shield, color guard (point position). I think the "Facts of Life" float was behind us. Anyway yes, when you learn to march in parade it becomes muscle memory. Also, you have to decide whether to step in the horse poop or hop and corrective skip step and hope everyone catches up. @jianmin @stoner @MiriShuli

@BBCRD this looks pretty neat! Would you consider making these reports available in epub format also?

(edit to add) or in html, so those of us who use ereaders for longer reading can convert them to epub?

this week I found out that when you start the Debian Linux instaler with speech, and it detects multiple soundcards, it cycles between them and you can press enter to choose the one that actually works. Most installers just pick a random soundcard and send speech through it. Maybe it picks the internal speakers, maybe it picks the digital output that has nothing hooked up to it. If you can't hear your machine, you'll have no idea the installer started, and good luck switching soundcards after that. As far as I know, the Windows installer certainly doesn't have a soundcard selection for narrator.
This would never be a problem with Debian installations because it will just keep cycling through the soundcards until the speech becomes audible. I know we all love to hate on Linux accessibility, but sometimes the thought that goes into the design of the simplest things is really quite impressive. This is also very on-brand for Linux and I'm definitely here for it.
At the time when this happened, I was on a call with Aira and had forgotten to turn up my speakers, so I know the machine displays a "Press enter to select device 1", "Press enter to select device 2..." prommpt, but I can't 100% confirm that the speech follows along. It seems like a safe assumption though, and at some point I'll do a proper test with multiple outputs and make a recording.
