Check out our new piece on potential environmental issues around enhanced weathering. Led by Charlotte Levy, we try to give clear monitoring and mitigation recommendations, rather than just a list of problems.

The supplement has loads of useful stuff, too!

Our sensitivity analysis of soil-based approaches to quantify carbon dioxide removal from enhanced rock weathering is published. In short, they should be useful in most regions as long as you get your sampling protocols right & choose the right feedstock!

My PhD method chapter is finally published. Read if you are interested in how we can use lake sediments to reconstruct how silicate rock weathering has changed over the last glacial transitions. :)
It is open acces!

A colleague and I are publishing a comment on a paper in a @wileyglobal journal. The open access fee is 4330$. The original paper is already open access. 4330$. For a comment. Grant does not cover publishing fees for a COMMENT. 4330$! What the actual fuck?!

Today I joined Isabella Chiaravalloti in the greenhouse to help with her enhanced rock weathering (ERW) experiments. Isabella is testing how ERW and associated metal release impacts fluxes of greenhouse gases (like carbon dioxide, but also methane, nitrous oxide, ammonia, and water vapor) from soils.

Super interesting and important for measurement, reporting, and verification of carbon dioxide removal! Can't wait for the results!

Every CDR talk anywhere should always start and end with the disclaimer that we still, absolutely and ASAP, need to cut CO2 emissions. As much as we need CDR, it won't matter much without deep decarbonization. I think the danger of politicians/public to miss this point is real...

Next exciting event @YaleUniversity after the #YCNCC symposium- Yale climate day! Super excited for the talks (and posters), and to learn more about the connection between climate change and the oceans. Particularly looking forward to the talk on the limits of life… #YaleClimateDay

Super excited to participate in the Yale YCNCC spring symposium on enhanced weathering. Two days of interesting panel discussions, talks – and most of all meeting fascinating people working on enhanced weathering from different backgrounds: science (natural & social!), business, policy.
Very inspiring to work at a place that brings together so many leading experts, helping to identify key challenges for enhanced weathering and bring about the collaborations to tackle them!

Spent yesterday out in the field helping Quinn Zacharias prepare for their big enhanced weathering field trials! Soon, they'll amend the soils with basalt powder, which will (hopefully!) remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

The project is unique, because they will apply basalt to a complete watershed. Plus the catchment is continuously monitored and has ~60 years of baseline data! Can't wait for their results! πŸ€“
