@peterbutler @diygene The Bay Trail gets very messy near the bridges to Alameda, and then gets bad again for a few blocks when you leave MLK Shoreline and have to ride on a too-wide, too-fast street near the Oakland airport. Some gaps to fill for sure.

@diygene @peterbutler I agree with everything Gene said. It's worth taking the extra time to go on the Oakland waterfront from Oak St to High Street, where you can get then on the bay trail at the Tidewater boating center. Going through Alameda doesn't really gain you anything, in my opinion. The grey line on your map would be my choice.

BART to Fruitvale then getting into the Bay trail from Fruitvale Ave would be a great option too. You'd avoid almost all city streets but still get to enjoy a ride through the best part of the Bay Trail through MLK Park between High St and Doolittle.

This driver should get a bike, apparently it's faster than driving a car on Bancroft Ave at rush hour, even when the driver repeatedly breaks several traffic laws.

The Bancroft Ave bike lane might be the worst in #Oakland, although I'm sure there's some stiff competition. Here, a car in the car lane turns right, while the car driving in the bike lane goes straight. 🤦‍♂️ #BikeOAK #BikeTooter

When I used Spoutible before, it seemed too exclusively focused on national politics for my taste (I follow national politics closely too, but it's not ALL I want to see in my timeline, especially when it's just Democratic Party cheerleading). Also the fandom toward the founder seemed creepy and almost cultlike.

I don't think I have the bandwidth to actively use more than 2 sites, so eventually it will be Mastodon and one other TBD.

@serenebabe I have an account on Spoutible. I used it sporadically for a few weeks because it and Post.news were the first non-Mastodon Twitter alternatives to let me in, but I've now ignored both of them for months. If I can remember how to log in there, I'll follow you, but please don't expect to hear a lot from me there. 😂

#Oakland is getting $8 million to plant trees across the city 🌳🌳🌳

OMG yes please, and thank you. The tree disparities between Oakland's rich neighborhoods and poor neighborhoods are dramatic and alarming, and have major consequences. My street in #EastOakland does not have a single sidewalk tree, because the sidewalks are so narrow. Thankfully there are a decent number of backyard trees on my block, so it's not too bad, but some streets in East and West Oakland are concrete deserts.

Trees do more than cool down neighborhoods and absorb carbon dioxide, they also have amazing social and health affects, building community, reducing violence, reducing pollution, reducing electricity needs in homes and buildings, and improving mental health. Trees are miraculous. We need as many as possible. (Except maybe those damn fire-prone eucalyptus trees.)
